Deferred Applicants
Guidance for Deferred Applicants - Counsellor/Psychotherapist and Supervisor Schemes
If your application for accreditation has been deferred, you will have received a detailed report outlining which criteria haven't been met, along with the reasons. You will have 6 months from the date of the letter to send us additional information. The guidance below will help you with this process.
Remember -
- You should send us any additional information within 6 months from the date of the deferral letter.
- You should send us all additional information in one go
- You should send us two sets of any additional information.
- The copies should be clearly marked 'additional information'. Put your BACP membership number on each page
- You will need to send us payment of £110* at the same time
- At the moment we don't have a facility for you to send additional information on-line.
The staff in the office are able to help you with queries on the process of resubmission but are not able to answer questions about your application or the assessor report. The office staff are not therapists or assessors and cannot provide guidance on what to write or interpret the report that has been provided. The assessors do not work in the office at BACP House so you will not be able to speak with them if you call.
*Fees are correct as at April 2012. From time to time we review our fees. Please check the website or call us to find out the current fee.
When you are putting together your additional information make sure you;
- Read the report that has been sent to you.
- Thoroughly address the deferred criteria using the points in the 'what is needed to meet the criteria' column as guidance
- Get your supervisor or consultant (as appropriate) to comment on any additional client or supervisee work you want to include and confirm it represents your typical work
- Tell us which criteria your additional information relates to
- Tell us about your ongoing counselling/psychotherapy (and supervision work if relevant) and supervision/consultancy arrangements. A covering letter is sufficient.
- Keep to the word-count. The original word counts are set out in the relevant application pack.
- For example; you have been deferred on 6.3 under the counsellor/psychotherapist scheme - you can write up to 900 words, or you have been deferred on 8.1.1, 8.1.2 and 8.1.3 - you can write up to 1000 words.
- Alternatively, if you have been deferred on 10.3 under the supervisor schemes - you can write up to 1000 words, but if you have been deferred on 10.1, 10.2 and 10.3 you can still write up to 1000 words in total.
What happens next?
When we receive your additional information this will be acknowledged in writing. Your original application will be put together with your new information and sent for re-assessment so assessors will see all the information you have sent us. The checking and assessment process is the same as for initial applications so you should expect to hear within around 4 months from sending us your additional information.
If you are successful at this stage, you will become accredited. If you are not successful, you will be able to apply for accreditation again, but you will have to wait until 12 months from the date of the letter telling you that you were unsuccessful*. If you send your application in before this date, we will return it to you. If you apply again, remember to tell us about this on the application form and send copies of any letters requested.
*Please see section below if you are applying under 4.3
Applicants applying under route 4.3.
If your application has been deferred, the information above still applies and you are allowed a further 6 months from the date of the letter to send in further evidence even if the 6 month deadline falls after 31st October 2012.
If your application has been unsuccessful, in order to allow for a period of reflection, you cannot submit a new application until at least 12 months have passed from the date of the final decision. This means that if you originally applied under 4.3 and your 12 month re-application date falls before the 31st October 2012 then you can submit a further application. However, if your 12 month re-application date falls after 31st October 2012 then sadly you will not be able to make a further application using this route. You will be advised in your results letter if this applies to you. If you still want to apply for accreditation you will need to apply under one of the remained two routes - please see the Accreditation Counsellor/Psychotherapist page of the website for further information on alternative routes.
What if I don't want to send additional information?
Some people might decide that the best way forward for them is to spend longer on client work, take some additional training or take more time for reflection on their practice and that this will take longer than 6 months. You can re-apply at any time but remember that this will be considered as an entirely new application.
