Chair's welcome
In the complex field of the psychological therapies one consistent factor
emerges as both a necessary and an effective part of the process. It is indeed
the relationship that matters. Across all theoretical orientations, work contexts
and specialist fields, the relationship formed between counsellor and client
is central to the impact of the therapy. And of course this is the case; relationship
is a central part of being human, from the first instinctive grasp of the infant
to the continued sharing of life, love and work that follows. Our relationships
to others, to our environment and to the planet are integral to our wellbeing.
This conference, through its title, has placed itself at
the heart of counselling and psychotherapy, and relationship is fully explored
in the conference themes:
between the external world and the consulting room, through politics and spirituality,
technology and movement, between body and mind, couples and groups, professional
and personal issues – a range of fields that is both broad and deep.
The conference aims to be a place that facilitates relationship
as well as reflection. The varied structure, the expertise of presenters
in their chosen
field, the access to the Therapy
Today exhibition at the same venue, provides
something for everyone in the way that best suits them. On the Friday evening
are two other events of note to which all are warmly invited, the Association’s
AGM, and the BACP Counselling and Psychotherapy Awards and Fellowship presentations,
in which we can recognise and appreciate some of the outstanding work achieved
in the field over the past year.
This conference promises to be an exciting, stimulating and challenging event,
and I look forward to seeing you there.
