Ethics and Standards

BACP Professional Standards Department has four key functions:

1. Develop coherent, evidence-based training standards for the counselling profession by: 

  • Developing evidence-based competences as the foundation of a core curriculum for counsellor/psychotherapist training
  • Developing evidence-based competences as a foundation for specialist training curricula 
  • Developing a Scope of Practice for the Counselling Professions which clarifies the parameters of practitioner roles  

2. Develop ethical practice in the counselling professions by: 

  • Delivering the new Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions (EFfCP) resources as a support to members
  • Providing member only Good Practice Guidance resources on a range of topics as a guide to ethical practice 
  • Providing an Ethics Help Desk service to signpost members to ethical decision making resources 

3. Alignment of BACP's internal standards by: 

  • Developing an intelligence and information data gathering function to support the development of BACP standards
  • Working with other departments to simplify and facilitate members' experience of engagement with BACP 

4. Engagement with Standards by: 

  • Providing resources to support the integration of the EFfCP and training and practice standards in counsellor training 
  • Providing resources to support the integration of the EFfCP and training and practice standards in therapy service delivery 
  • Providing resources to support the integration of the EFfCP in supervision training and practice
