NHS Choices directory: BACP members invited to apply for services listing
NHS Choices is a comprehensive healthcare information service intended to help individuals make choices about their health, from lifestyle decisions about things like smoking, drinking and exercise, through to the practical aspects of finding and using NHS services in England.
It draws together the knowledge and expertise of the NHS Evidence: Health Information Resources (formerly National Library for Health); the Information Centre for Health and Social Care, and the Care Quality Commission (CQC), along with many other organisations.
Its sections include: Medical advice now, for those with an immediate medical worry. There is a Find Services section, with telephone numbers and full details of services from GPs and dentists to carer services and gyms. A Health A-Z section explains more than 750 conditions, while Compare hospitals compares on criteria such as cleanliness and experience of a particular procedure.
Viewers of the site can also comment on hospitals and GPs. These comments will eventually become part of an overall ‘ranking', showing the public's opinion of every hospital and GP that does NHS work in England.
The ‘Find Services' section of NHS Choices is currently reviewing the support services in the Mental Health category to support the formation of an ‘Emotional Support' directory. The aim of this directory will be to allow users to find services providing short and medium-term interventions for emotional health.
NHS Choices is currently collecting data of BACP members working in NHS organisations to inform this directory.
BACP has provided NHS Choices with a list of Services, who will be contacted by NHS Choices over the next few weeks.

The relationship between counselling and IAPT
The policy statement on IAPT and counselling is now available on the IAPT website. This explains the role of counsellors and counselling within the IAPT programme.

NEW IAPT WEBSITE
IAPT now have their own website, http://www.nhs.uk/iapt. This website will explain the role of IAPT and their plans for the future and is designed to engage the public in the role of the IAPT programme.

32 PCTS TO SPEARHEAD SURGE IN TALKING THERAPIES
Health minister Ivan Lewis today announced the 32 sites who will begin to roll out talking therapies around the country.
Each of the 32 Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) will receive a share of the £33 million first instalment of new money announced for the purpose by Health Secretary Alan Johnson on World Mental Health Day last year (10 October).
The funds will help the NHS create a new workforce that can offer properly supervised low intensity and high intensity therapy, slashing waiting times for this kind of treatment andh elping patients achieve a level of recovery that they can clearly see and which is in line with the evidence from clinical trials that has been independently reviewed by the national
Institute for health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).
Care Services Minister Ivan Lewis said:
“This initiative will transform the way the NHS helps people with depression and anxiety disorders. It will help to reduce the stigma associated with mental health problems. I believe it is one of the most important advances for NHS services in a generation.”
Over the next three years, 3,600 extra therapists will be trained and offer treatment to 900,000 people. In the first year, at least 700 therapists will be trained and see around 100,000 people.
Training places are expected to become available through the NHS Jobs website www.jobs.nhs.uk from late June.
