| experienced practitioner network Experienced practitioner network and the ethics helpdesk The Experienced Practitioner Network (EPN) was developed as a resource for BACP members via the Ethics Helpdesk team in the Information Services Department. As the number of enquiries increased from members with concerns about the ethical issues of practice it was decided that as a support to the Ethics Helpdesk it would be valuable to involve very experienced practitioner members who could offer perspectives as practitioners. The Ethics Helpdesk team are staff members who receive regular monthly training and supervision sessions in ethical aspects of c/p centred on the Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy and are now very experienced in assisting members to explore the options around their dilemmas. Members often use the ethics helpdesk team as a 'sounding board'. These options can be further discussed at supervision before any final decision is made. However there are times when members wish to have the expertise of practitioners and/or when their dilemma has a dimension that the staff are less able to help with. It is on these occasions that we refer to the EPN. As far as possible this process is now done electronically. Members are asked to send their enquiry in writing to the Ethics Helpdesk team. The enquiry is then anonomysed and sent to several members of the EPN, usually by email, who then send their responses back to be forwarded to the member. In this way there may be several different and useful perspectives offered about the dilemma raised, while confidentiality is maintained. As all members of the EPN are volunteers and busy practitioners, we request that these responses are returned within a month of the initial approach, although, often, they are returned much more quickly than this. We hope that members will feel free to use these services as it is intended to be a support service for them, the Information Service telephone line is: 0870 443 5227 or email to denise.chaytor@bacp.co.uk in the first instance. Members may also find the work and discussion area of the Supervision Forum of interest. This can be accessed via our website at: www.bacp.co.uk/supervision |
