Research Strategy

Aim:
Towards an evidence-based profession through the integration of research, training and practice.

The roll out of this model across the BACP sectors would be how the strategy is implemented.

GLOSSARY:

RCTs Randomised Controlled Trials
PRNs Practice Research Networks

The model is based on the idea that research findings need to be translated into practice and that practice needs to be evaluated. The findings from evaluation are then used to further develop models of practice, creating a feedback loop.

Key stages

Competence frameworks are developed, based on existing research evidence, providing a basis for practice. These are then translated into training programmes. A textbook or manual is commissioned to support the training.

Practitioners are trained and an adherence scale is used to assess how far they are implementing the competence framework.

PRNs, bringing together researchers and practitioners, develop systems of outcome monitoring. Evaluation data is pooled and analysed across the network.

RCTs are conducted to supplement the evidence generated by the PRNs.

The findings of RCTs and PRNs feedback into the competence frameworks which are adapted in the light of empirical findings. Training programmes are adjusted  to accommodate these adaptations and the new findings are translated into practice.

Links with HEIs will be important to ensure academic rigour at all stages of the process.
