Research Department
The Research Department at BACP came into being in 1999 with a part time Research Manager and one full time administrator. The early years saw the development of the online Research Network, a new research journal for BACP members ‘Counselling and Psychotherapy Research Journal' (CPR) and the formation of a research enquiry service. In that first year we also took on the running of a research conference which had already had four annual events. Professors Sue Wheeler and John McLeod were happy to see their ‘baby' being adopted, nourished and cared for by BACP and have seen it grown from a small one day event to a major research conference attracting international delegates and speakers.
In those 12 years, the Research Department has grown into a well established and thriving department with five full time staff members. We established the first ‘Ethical Guidelines for Counselling and Psychotherapy; we now commission research, take part in collaborative research projects, offer seedcorn funding for a small research project annually and continue to publish pertinent research information sheets. We are currently formulating a Practice Research Network (PRN) in schools counselling, with the aim of offering the successful template for further PRNs in other areas.
We facilitate awards for students with the CPR Student Award sponsored by Taylor & Francis (value £500) and have a new award this year sponsored by PCCS Books (value £500) for members studying person centred counselling; we also offer bursaries for members undertaking a PhD in C&P, which covers the student's membership fee. With the support of the CEO and the Board, the work of the department continues to flourish. Drop by the Research stand at the student conference for an informal chat about how we might help you.

APSCC is concerned not only with those who work as counsellors and psychotherapists, chaplains or pastoral carers within faith communities but, far more broadly, with all those in the counselling and psychotherapy field who take spirituality seriously and wish to take their clients' spirituality seriously! Through our journal, Thresholds, and through lively conferences we hold open a place of conversation for those from a wide variety of spiritual and therapeutic beliefs. A place where, for example, an agnostic person-centred therapist and a Catholic Jungian can both be at home- and can enrich each other! Where the tradition of pastoral care is taken seriously and its wisdom can be drawn on.
