Welcome to our new website. This is the most visible and public element of a broad project of work which has seen us upgrade and improve much of our technological infrastructure and behind-the-scenes processes.
The website you see now is very much a work in progress. Throughout 2018 we’ll be developing it further and making improvements based on the feedback we get from members and users.
As we continue to work hard to bring you the best possible online resources, we’re grateful for your patience, your support and your constructive feedback.
We’d like to thank all members and clients who helped us in developing our new website. Whether by taking part in focus groups, telephone interviews or web workshops, your input has been invaluable. Through your continued involvement, and by responding to your feedback, we'll continue to improve the site's navigation, accessibility and ease-of-use.
User-focused: This site is focused on those who use it. From influencing the menu layouts and search categories to inspiring the overall design, our members and the public have helped us make the key decisions.
Intuitive: We hope you’ll find the site more straightforward and easier to use. Our priority has been to give you easy access to the full range of membership benefits online.
Flexible: The search function is powerful but easy to use but powerful. Whether you’re searching for practice guidance, journal articles, events or therapists, we’ve aimed to make it quick and easy to find what you’re looking for.
Responsive: We've used the latest design techniques to ensure the website looks the same and is easy to use, whether you’re using it on your phone, tablet or desktop computer.
Accessible: Our new site is compatible with all major screen readers.
Bringing everything together
We've brought together all our satellite sites, including the divisional sites and It's good to talk, into this one website. By hosting the therapist directory on our main website, we can better promote it as a BACP service, giving it additional credibility.
Having everything in one place helps our website, and the directory, appear higher in Google searches and makes it easier to promote our work to different audiences.
Why change now?
In 2015 we undertook a strategic review of our mission, values and objectives. We consulted with you to find out what you wanted from us and how we could best support you. Your feedback resulted in our new strategy, a restructure of our business and a reprioritising of our resources.
As part of these improvements, we recognised the importance of a modern, user-friendly website, to support us in achieving our strategic intents. This website will be a more useful online destination for the public – allowing them to get trusted information about counselling and its benefits and to contact counselling professionals who can help them.
Using our resources efficiently
As part of the improvements, we’ve invested significantly in the development of our IT infrastructure and have upgraded to a new CRM database. CRM stands for Customer Relationship Management. Our CRM database is where we store all of our data about our members and other contacts and is fundamental to all of our communications, products and services.
This work has been expensive but vital. Our strategic intents include using 'our resources efficiently and effectively to fulfil our internal and external strategic objectives to maximise impact’. As a registered charity, we’re also accountable to the Charity Commission and are required to spend our money appropriately.
We’re transparent and accountable about how we spend our money and publish our financial statements every year. Our Annual Review and Financial Statements 2016 to 2017 gives a breakdown of all major spending with notes to explain what the numbers mean. Our 2017 to 2018 financial statements will be available in the autumn.
What the changes mean for you
To access the member-only resources on our website, and so that we’re able to communicate with you, you'll need to give us your email address. Log in to your account to amend your email address.
If you have a listing on our Find a Therapist directory, you’ll need to log into your member account to check your listing and update your details. The sections of your profile that describe your fees and qualifications will be missing and you'll need to add them in. This is because of limitations in how we're able to migrate the data over from one system to the other.

What’s coming next?
We'll be developing the website further throughout 2018. As well as responding to your feedback, we've already committed to improving some key areas.
Account area: The dashboard you see when you log in to your account will be extended to give you an overview of all aspects of your membership, including any divisional memberships and upcoming events. You’ll also be able to download receipts and invoices.
Therapist directory: We'll be adding your logos to the search results page and enhancing the way listings are found and ordered in search results.
Apply online: We'll be putting BACP membership applications online, making the experience of joining our organisation quicker, easier and more convenient.
Accessibility: We’re working towards the industry standard of AA website content accessibility. This means that people with visual impairments and other disabilities will be able to access all the information and resources on our website.
Search results: We’ll continue to improve our search results using the latest SEO (search engine optimisation) techniques to ensure our pages are prominent and easy to find in web searches.
