The Ethics and Good Practice Steering Committee (EaGPSC) supports the implementation of BACP’s Ethical Framework within member practice and develops evidence informed Good Practice in Action (GPiA) resources in the interests of clients, members and other stakeholders.

The committee works in collaboration with BACP staff, who publish and review the Ethical Framework and manage the commissioning and editing of the good practice resources.

We're looking to recruit a member with an interest in contracting within different therapeutic settings. Working alongside a small working group of practitioners, with diverse experiences of contracting and using contracts, you will collate recommendations for the EaGPSC to consider in commissioning future resources. You will need a breadth of experience of producing contracts appropriate for use with different client groups and  of contracting in a variety of settings. Support will be available with the formation of the working group.

Term of office

Committee members are appointed for up to three years. This may be extended for a further three years.

Time commitment

You must attend up to four committee meetings a year. These will usually be held at BACP House in Lutterworth but there are facilities for remote access.  

You'll also have ongoing background work, which may include taking part in working groups producing resources on particular topics or reading and reviewing Good Practice in Action publications.

General responsibilities

The duties of an EaGPSC member are to:

  • work collaboratively with BACP Professional Standards department
  • safeguard the good name and values of BACP, ensuring the Ethical Framework and Good Practice in Action resources produced are to agreed quality assurance standards
  • encourage members to embed ethics within practice
  • network
  • give your viewpoint on prioritisation and production of ethics and good practice resources
  • represent BACP and our members to wider stakeholder groups, including training and placement providers

Carrying out the role

As an EaGPSC member you'll be expected to:

  • attend committee meetings fully prepared, having read all the papers and documents sent out (where possible, meeting dates are agreed in advance to support attendance)
  • act as an ambassador for BACP within the membership
  • adhere to our policies, procedures and code of conduct relating to volunteers
  • adhere to and support the governance framework
  • maintain absolute confidentiality of sensitive and confidential information
  • always act in the best interests of BACP
  • observe the seven Nolan principles: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty, leadership

Skills and abilities

You will:

  • be willing to devote time and effort to the role
  • have good, independent judgement
  • be able to think creatively
  • understand the responsibilities of the position
  • be IT literate - able and willing to use technology on BACP business (papers are distributed through email)
  • have a passion for ethics

Experience of writing or publishing is desirable but not essential.


There is no remuneration for this role, however we will reimburse reasonable expenses incurred in carrying out the role in line with our volunteers expenses policy.
