Experiences of therapy of Black, gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men
My name is Ben Amponsah, a qualified psychotherapist, studying for a doctorate in counselling psychology at Glasgow Caledonian University. As part of my research I am doing a study that relates to the experiences of therapy of Black gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). I am looking for Black GBMSM who have had at least one instance of psychological therapy who would be willing to take part in the study.
As a Black, gay man myself I have found that there is very little research on Black GBMSM’s experience of mental health that examines it from the perspective of our experience of therapy, or that looks at how our ethnicity, sexuality and gender interact. I think it is vital to understand how racism, operating in what should be a therapeutic space, can create additional challenges. This research will also support our access and engagement with therapy, and ultimately help therapists support our minority group.
I’d like to conduct an online 1 to 1 interview with you at a time and location convenient to you using Zoom or Teams (or we can use telephone or Skype, whichever you prefer). The interviews will be about an hour. Interviews will be recorded and transcribed then anonymised, with the recordings destroyed once the transcriptions are checked. Only myself and my two supervisors will see the transcripts, so the whole process is confidential.
Please get in touch if you would like to learn more about the study and/or would like to take part.
The study has been given ethical approval by the Research Ethics committee at Glasgow Caledonian University and is supervised by Professors Jamie Frankis and Ima Jackson. The study will be conducted in accordance with the ethical guidelines provided by the British Psychological Society, but if you have any concerns about this research and wish to speak to an independent person, please contact Simon.Hunter@gcu.ac.uk.
I look forward to hearing from you. If you would like further information or to get involved, please email me on:
