The purpose of this study is to explore counsellors’ experiences of kink within the counselling room. I am a trainee integrative counsellor in the second year of my masters at Northampton university. I am completing research as part of my dissertation.

Ethical approval has been granted by the University of Northampton Ethics Committee.

What is the purpose of the study?

Research has found that kinky individuals find it difficult to find supportive mental health support (Herbitter, et al., 2021; New et al., 2021) however little research has focused on the experiences of the counsellor. Kink is also becoming more visible however there is a cultural conditioning which favours monogamy (Calhoun-Shepard, 2019). Therefore, it is important to explore counsellors experience to see what they need to support kinky individuals, as research also found that there is a lack of training in sexual diversity (Herbitter, et al., 2021; Nevard, 2021; New et al., 2021).

I am looking for qualified counsellors who have experience of kink within the counselling room to participate in a semi structure interview regarding their experience. The interview will last approximately 60 minutes.
