I am a PhD student at Liverpool John Moores University and am looking for participants for my research into the use of the core conditions with primary aged children in school based counselling.

The therapist provided conditions of congruence, unconditional positive regard and empathetic understanding lie at the heart of a solid relationship between client and therapist.

An understanding of how these conditions are defined and conveyed in school-based counselling is fundamental to offering effective therapeutic interventions to children. Given the centrality of these conditions in the therapeutic process in multiple therapeutic approaches, it is somewhat surprising that they are minimally explored in relation to children in school-based counselling. This lack of exploration presents a significant gap between person-centred theory and the practice of person-centred counselling in schools.

I wish to examine how person-centred school-based counsellors understand, experience and convey congruence, empathy and unconditional positive regard with primary age clients who are receiving counselling in school. I aim to gain insight into your experiences of using and offering these conditions to children, how they are conveyed and why they are conveyed in this way, whether you think this has helped or hindered therapy and your relationship with your clients and why.

Inclusion criteria is as follows:

  • You are a qualified counsellor
  • You have been qualified for at least a year
  • You are a person-centred therapist
  • You are currently working with primary aged school children or have worked with this age group in the last year.

If you meet this criteria and are interested in taking part in the study then please do not hesitate to contact me on k.scott@2020.ljmu.ac.uk and I will send you more information.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this and I look forward to hearing from you.
