This event has been created in response to demand for more specialist learning from therapists and professionals with lived experience of gender dysphoria and gender diversity, and is being organised in collaboration with 'The Queer Therapist'.

This event is for counsellors and psychotherapists who wish to increase their knowledge and understanding around the current best practice for working alongside gender diverse people. You may be interested in beginning work alongside gender diverse people or are already working with gender diverse clients in a range of clinical settings.

The event will introduce participants to:

  • what is ‘gender dysphoria?’
  • specific terminology, skills and knowledge relating to the use of language when working alongside gender diverse clients
  • the historical, medical and legal context for gender diverse clients in the UK
  • key psychotherapeutic themes in relation to gender diverse clients
  • gender affirming therapy and best practice in relation to working with gender diverse clients in line with WPATH (The World Professional Association for Transgender Health) Standards of care for the Health of Transsexual, Transgender, and Gender Nonconforming People

The main aims of this event

  • to gain understanding of specific terminology, skills and knowledge relating to the use of language when working alongside gender diverse clients
  • to provide a basic introduction to historical, medical and legal context for gender diverse clients 
  • to gain awareness of the key therapeutic themes in relation to gender diverse clients
  • to be able to demonstrate good practice in relation to working with gender diverse clients in line with WPATH standards of care V.7

Throughout the event, you'll hear a range of presentations covering topics including an introduction to the topic area, a focus on the the key therapeutic themes when working with gender diverse clients as well as focusing on the legal context and current legal pathways to living socially and legally in one's congruent gender.

The event will begin at 9.30am with a welcome from Chris Grant (pronouns: they/them), the host for the day, and will conclude at 1.00pm with a panel session with all of the presenters including Oscar Davies (pronouns: they/them) and Jolliff Seville (pronouns: he/him). If you are unable to watch the event live on the day, you will have access to the recordings for three months afterwards.
