This event focuses on the key role of the counsellor when working with victims and survivors of domestic abuse, alongside the importance of trauma-informed care and understanding the psychological dynamics of domestic abuse. Delegates will be better equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to support clients effectively while also safeguarding their own well-being.
The event will look at the impact of domestic abuse prevention and intervention ensuring domestic abuse disclosures are not disregarded as trivial, turning a reactive ‘it’s just a domestic’ into a proactive ‘you must ask’ questions approach.
The event will adopt a gender inclusive approach whilst acknowledging a larger prevalence of women are disproportionally affected by domestic abuse.
Event aims
This main aims of this event are to:
- gain a better understanding of the law, current trends, intersectionality, support services and relevant resources available when working with clients who show signs of, or have disclosed, domestic abuse
- have a greater understanding of best practice when working with risk management ensuring the client’s needs as well as client safety is central to the counselling process.
- have a better understanding of what direct questions must be asked when there is a disclosure or indication of domestic abuse
with a focus on keeping victims and their children safe and ensuring perpetrators are proactively identified and managed. - understand the role of early intervention and prevention.
