In my private practice as a counsellor and psychotherapist I work with a number of employee assistance programes (EAPs) that offer their employees access to counselling sessions.

There are often some simple things that clients can do to reduce the likelihood of work place stress:

  • take regular breaks
    Whether workplace culture or a bad habit, not taking a break is a sure way to contribute to stress levels within the workplace. I always encourage clients to reassess what breaks they are taking and to ensure they put self-nurture at the top of their agenda.

  • eat away from your desk
    Getting away from the desk means you avoid having to take a phone call or getting caught up in a conversation with your colleagues.

  • socialise with colleagues
    Having emotional connections with others in the workplace can boost your sense of wellbeing.

  • manage your diary effectively
    Ensure you allow for breaks in between meetings. Write a to do list every morning - this can help clients feel more in control of their working day.

  • keep a work life balance
    Engage in activities outside of work, whether a sporting activity or something else you enjoy.

  • don't work beyond your hours
    Sending emails during the night or staying in the office well beyond the hours you should be is not healthy! In the long term this is a sure way to increase your likelihood of workplace stress. Simple advice is stop - it’s often counterproductive anyway.

  • recognise the emotional impact of things outside of the workplace
    Taking time out to reflect on what parts of your stress are because of work related issues or personal issues can help you to acknowledge what's really going on for you.
