About me and my therapy practice

I describe my approach to therapy as person-centred and humanistic. This means that if you come and see me, we will work together to identify, understand and explore the challenges in your life as you see them, and find solutions that make sense to you. You are the expert on your life, not me. My role is not to ‘fix’ or advise you, but to help you see more clearly what is causing your suffering in order for you to grow and develop with increased peace of mind and confidence.

I’ve seen this process take place quickly sometimes, over just a few sessions. But it may also require patience and commitment. This too is something we will discuss and reflect upon if you choose to work with me.

I am a qualified and experienced mindfulness trainer for groups, and I also offer one-to-one sessions. While this practice is distinct from my counselling and psychotherapy work, mindfulness has helped me to become a more attentive and aware therapist. I hope that you too may benefit from this quality as we work together.

Over the last decade and a half I have worked therapeutically across a wide range of settings, including in schools with parents and children, with carers in the NHS, with homeless young people, with members of the LGBT+ community, as well as with adults in private practice. I have helped clients with a wide variety of issues such as anxiety and depression, bereavement, loneliness, family breakdown, attachment issues, domestic abuse, addiction, relationships, sexuality and sexual identity.

Practice description

Sessions usually develop from how you are feeling in the moment and what you would like to focus on. Sometimes it can take a while to settle into a session and we might need to be patient to allow things to arise. The process of therapy can be thought about as one in which you learn to understand yourself better and to trust your own judgment. My role is to try to facilitate that.

My first session

I offer the option of an initial consultation, either online or in person, where you can say a little about what you wish to explore and get support with. I can also explain how I work and you can ask me any questions you might have. This usually lasts around 30 minutes and is free of charge. I do not use written assessments.

If we decide that we wish to work together, subsequent sessions last 50 minutes and are usually weekly, although other frequencies are possible depending on need and circumstance.

About me and my therapy practice

I have a Diploma in Person-centred Supervision from the Metanoia Institute and part of my practice involves supervising the work of other counsellors/psychotherapists.

I offer face-to-face and online supervision and have extensive experience of working with qualified therapists from a range of modalities who see both adult and child clients. I also have experience of supervising trainee or newly qualified therapists.

As a supervisor, I aim to cultivate the same person-centred values and attitudes with my supervisee as those I bring to my own client work. A therapist’s work can be challenging and I find that the best way of facilitating their practice is to model in supervision the qualities they need to actualise to bring about change with their clients.

In the supervision relationship these values and attitudes help to foster the development of trust, collaboration and personal and professional growth.

In addition to therapeutic supervision, for many years I have offered managerial experience in local and national third-sector organisations, both in-house and externally. This has included working with service managers and senior executives.

Sessions usually last an hour and a half and I charge £65 for a session. If you’d like to talk about working with me as a supervisee, I offer an initial free 30-minute consultation by phone or Skype.
