About me and my therapy practice

I am an experienced individual and couple psychotherapist and am used to working with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.  My main approach is psychodynamic, however I keep in mind what will be most helpful at any particular point in your therapy.

Areas I help couples with include repetitive or entrenched arguments, sexual issues, cultural differences, difficulties starting a family or with family life, parenting or co-parenting, issues around retirement, separation and divorce.

Difficulties that individuals bring include anxiety and/or depression, feeling stuck in a particular area of life, loneliness, feeling a lack of creativity, problems at work and problems with family or romantic relationships.

WHAT IS PSYCHODYNAMIC PSYCHOTHERAPY?

Psychodynamic psychotherapy takes account of your whole history and how it has shaped you and contributed to what is troubling you now. You may be aware that you are repeating destructive patterns in your life or in your relationship but not know why.

In working with couples, the relationship is the focus of the therapy. We will look at how feelings and behaviour are the result of how you interact at a couple, rather than putting the blame for problems on one partner or the other.

TRUST

I aim to build a trusting relationship in which you feel able to talk about things you may never have talked about before without fear of being judged. I treat all problems clients bring with respect and in confidence.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Tavistock Relationships - I am a visiting clinician with TR's Parenting Service.

Honorary Psychotherapist - NHS. 3 years working with patients with complex issues alongside my private practice.

Tavistock and Portman - Diploma in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy with Couples.

WPF Therapy - PG Dip in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy.

I am registered with the BPC and the BACP and abide by the Ethical and professional standards of these organisations.

Practice description

My therapy room is in a calm and secure therapy practice.  The building is only used by other counsellors and psychotherapists and their clients.

Remote therapy via Zoom or phone can be the first choice for some couples or individuals.  This may be because of busy schedules, living in a remote area or abroad, or because they feel more comfortable talking in this way.  If you choose remote therapy then this will be via a secure link and I make sure that confidentiality is maintained.

My first session

For the initial assessment I usually offer two sessions a week apart each lasting 50 minutes.

We will talk about the immediate reasons that bring you or you and your partner to therapy and I will also ask you about some of the important relationships and experiences in your life.  We may start to think about how these have impacted on you,  always paying attention to what you feel comfortable to talk about at this point. I will ask you a little about your medical history including any mental health issues and medication you have or are taking.

We will try to identify what it is you are looking for from therapy and there will be time for any questions you want to ask me.

Practice description

My therapy room is in a quiet pedestrian Square on the borders of Farringdon, Clerkenwell and Islington. The building is only used by other therapists and their clients.

My first session

Whether you are seeking therapy as an individual or a couple I suggest we start with 2 sessions as an assessment for how therapy works and whether this way of working feels helpful for you.

Sessions are usually 50 minutes for both individuals and couples.

Some couples opt to come for 1 hour sessions.

Fees

My usual fees are :  Individual £70-£80

                                  : Couple £95-£120

The fee will be discussed in the first session and will depend on a number of factors.  I hold some low cost spaces for students and those on low incomes.
