About me and my therapy practice
My counselling style is a combination of honest, calm and caring. I will listen to you empathically, without judgement and with sincerity and try to understand the issues affecting you. My job is not to offer advice or guidance but to facilitate your therapeutic journey.
I will encourage you to stick to your therapeutic goals and explore your options and enable you to move forward and make the changes you need to feel happier. You will have greater self awareness and insight into your issues which, in itself, is an important step in that journey.
My training is in Integrative therapy which means that I will use elements of different therapeutic approaches at different times throughout the therapy as the evolvement of your therapy dictates. I also have a keen interest in attachment theory, difference and diversity and I sometimes work with photographs to enhance memory.
One of the principal aims of the therapist is to build a trusting relationship with you, the client, in order for you to feel safe enough to talk about your issues. This is really important because you have made the decision to look into counselling and you need to know that you are safe with me as your therapist and that you are being listened to. I will make sure this happens for you.
How Long Will Counselling Take?
This is largely affected by your goals for therapy. As a rough example, if your therapy is looking at specific goals around changing thought patterns and behaviour, it may be more beneficial to you to work in a focussed way, in which case short term therapy of 6-12 weeks may sufficient. If, however, your issues are ones that need exploration, you may benefit from a longer time in therapy. Each client's goals are different and can be discussed and agreed at the first session/assessment stage and revisited throughout your therapy.
I am appropriately insured, meeting the standards applicable to practice safely and ethically.
I work face to face out of therapy rooms in the Borough, London SE1 and can offer evenings and weekends. Each session lasts 50 minutes and is offered on a weekly basis.
My first session
I understand that this might be the first time that you have reached out to a therapist and it might feel a bit daunting. I am easy going. So, if you would like further information or have any questions about my practice, do give me a call or email me and I'd be happy to go through it with you.
During the telephone call I will be asking various questions around why you are looking for therapy and what goals you are hoping for. If you then decide that you would like to go ahead with counselling we will arrange a date for an assessment and first session face to face.
In the assessment/first session, I will be taking certain details from you (or you can send these prior to the appointment). We will make an agreement which sets out what you can expect from me as your counsellor, how your records are kept, confidentiality, payment and so on. Trust and sincerity are paramount to my practice and previous clients have remarked on how safe they feel with me. The assessment/first session usually lasts between 60 and 90 minutes.
