About me and my therapy practice

I am a MBACP (Accredited) trauma-informed and EMDR therapist. I am also Level 1 in EMDR for children.

Trauma can form in response to any experience which you have found distressing or overwhelming. As a result, you may find yourself exhibiting effects such as anxiety, poor concentration, trouble sleeping, or mood swings. If these are getting in the way of your daily life then it may be a sign that professional help is required to help process the memories of what happened.

That is where Eye Movement De-sensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) comes in.

EMDR is an interactive therapy technique. The more complex the trauma, the more sessions are required, but it is believed that 12 sessions are usually enough for simple/one-event traumas (NICE guidelines).

EMDR treatment would see you recall traumatic memories while I guide you through rapid eye movements. These movements trigger a part in your brain which helps to sort out and organise the distressing memories so that the symptoms lessen.

In other words, EMDR collects core traumatic memories and files them away appropriately in the cabinet that is your brain. It is not hypnosis, and these memories will still exist, but you can continue with your day to day life.

A 2012 study showed that 77% of those who used EMDR therapy found that their symptoms (anxiety, depression and low self-esteem) had eased.

I am also a person-centred counsellor.

I have experience working with issues such as:

Abuse

Anxiety

Borderline Personality Disorder

Bullying

Coercive Control

Complex PTSD

Depression

Low self-esteem

Narcissist Abuse

Personality Disorders

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Self-harm

Suicidal thoughts and idealisation

Practice description

I offer a quiet and comfortable therapy room in which difficult feelings and emotions can be safely contained.  I work with a limited number of clients to ensure that I can be fully available and present for all my clients.

It is the strength of human spirit and its capacity to heal from the most terrible trauma which sustains me in my work.

I regularly keep up to date with new research in psychotherapy to improve and adapt the way that I practice.

I hold communication and the therapeutic to be very important. If something is not working for you, we can find a way around it.

My first session

Once we have had our initial contact either through email or telephone we can arrange to meet for an initial consultation. This allows us time to see if we think we could work together.

It will give you the opportunity to tell me about yourself, the current difficulties which you are experiencing and offer you the opportunity to ask me any questions which you might have.

Once we have met, you can reflect on our discussion and think about what you would like to do next.
