About me and my therapy practice
I am an experienced Senior Accredited BACP counsellor currently offering telephone and online counselling; face-to-face sessions are under review. I have worked full time within the counselling field since 1996, in the NHS, private and voluntary sectors. I have had a busy private practice in East Dulwich since 2004.
I work with and have experience of helping with a very wide range of difficulties such as stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, depression and relationship issues. I have particular expertise in bereavement (I was a hospice bereavement counsellor), loss, trauma, employment issues, problems with drugs or alcohol (nine years in the substance misuse field from 1993) and addictive behaviours.
My approach is integrative, which means that the most effective approach is used to meet your needs. This is underpinned by a humanistic philosophy that assumes the capacity of each person to shape their own life. I draw from person-centred, existential and cognitive-behavioural therapies, with an emphasis on empowering the individual.
Since 2000, I have provided workplace counselling, mediation and management support in organisations ranging from finance, healthcare, retail, hospitality and the public sectors, mostly in London and the South East. I provided regular support for HMP staff working with sex offenders for over five years. I have attended more than 120 critical incidents, supporting managers and staff after traumatic events such as assaults, accidents, railway fatalities, suicides and the London terrorist attacks.
If you are considering counselling, please feel free to get in touch for an informal discussion, without obligation.
I have a comfortable, professional home-based practice with a generous-sized practice room, which is the first room immediately inside the front entrance.
Please see my website for a photograph of the therapy room.
My first session
The first session is generally exploratory, for us to meet, talk about the possible focus of your sessions and an opportunity for you to ask any questions that you might have. It is important that you feel at ease with your counsellor and they are a 'good fit' for you so I am happy for you to reflect on this after the first session before committing to further sessions.
As sessions evolve, different issues might emerge and interlink so we can discuss whether the focus might change as we progress. I work flexibly and organically, with the most important factor being that sessions are helpful to you. There might be times when the sessions are challenging but I am fully committed to supporting you throughout the process and towards your goals.
