I work mid-week as a counsellor in an NHS funded service meaning I'm only currently available on Sundays between 10am - 5pm. I may also be able to offer appointments on Thursdays between 9am - 5am from August 2022.
About me and my therapy practice
Warm, welcoming and gentle; I am someone you can trust. I have understanding of and work effectively with anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, bereavement, identity issues, low self-esteem, trauma-related difficulties, self-harm and suicidality. You are likely to experience me as someone keenly interested in you, not as a list of symptoms, but as an individual with your own views, ideas and preferences which will inform our work together.
People come to see me for help with various differing problems and conundrums. Perhaps you have lost touch with the ‘real you’, feel there are different parts of you at conflict or feel a searching for something missing. Perhaps the ‘real you’ has never been clear, or difficulties with identity, meaning and purpose have permeated much of your life. Perhaps you are finding it difficult to know what you want, endlessly putting others’ needs above your own or feel not in control of your life and its direction. Whatever the issue, you will be met with my warm and sustained presence, non-judgement and compassion.
I work in a person-centred way, respecting your uniqueness as an individual and honouring your own process. You are the expert on you, not me nor anyone else for that matter, and therefore the counselling process is yours to make use out of in a way that works for you. I help by accompanying you along the way, helping you make sense of yourself; your feelings, desires, wants, needs, choices and your direction in life. I am influenced by ideas of Pluralism (that there is no single one way of doing things), by Martin Buber's I-Thou philosophy (a commitment in relating to the uniqueness of others without reducing people down to objects i.e. diagnoses), and by Mindfulness (the state of being that emerges when deliberately paying attention to the present moment, non-judgmentally)
I passed my Post-Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy with distinction from the University of Salford in 2017. Since then I have had extensive experience in brief-therapy working for an NHS-partnered IAPT service, but I am equally happy and comfortable working with you for any duration of time; whatever feels right for you
My first session
To help you reach a decision as to whether or not I'm the right therapist for you I offer a free 30 minute consultation which could be in person, over the telephone or via Zoom. It’s a way for us to introduce ourselves to each other, ask questions and decide upon next steps. By doing this you may get a sense if something doesn’t feel right for you and choose to seek out a different therapist you feel more suited to. It might also be that it helps you clarify what you want to do, and that might also include a realisation that therapy isn’t the right thing for you at this time. Or it might act as confirmation for you that you are in the right place, with the right person and on the right path.
If you do go forward with me as your therapist after the initial consultation you can then expect us to talk through and sign a counselling agreement detailing the particulars of our work together i.e. fees (£40 - £50), confidentiality, boundaries, process of therapy, endings. This will be done in our first counselling session. Following this we may agree upon a set number of sessions to start with (most commonly six) and then we'll review how things are going. Or you may decide not to work to a set number of sessions and just take one session at a time with us checking in with each other and reflecting on the therapy along the way. Either in our first session if appropriate or at a review session, I may invite you to fill out (or just simply talk through) a questionnaire which will help you identify your therapy preferences and help us both construct a therapy that makes sense to you and your wants/needs.
