About me and my therapy practice
I work in the person-centred tradition of counselling, and with a 'Focusing' orientation: this is a way of helping clients locate and focus on the elusive, wordless 'felt senses' which we experience inwardly but find difficult to pin down. Understanding and knowing these better can be very rewarding and releasing, and many clients find this extremely helpful. Within my counselling work I respect the fact that each person is individual, and no two people work the same way. I therefore integrate aspects of other counselling models and approaches, where I think it might be beneficial to you. These could include aspects of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Transactional Analysis (TA), psychodynamic theory, or mindfulness, for example. The key concept is that I follow you and as our work together progresses, you hopefully get a good feel of what helps you most.
That's the background bit. The important bit of what I want to say is how much I enjoy my work of counselling, as I see again and again how this process can transform people's lives, changing the way we see and interact with ourselves and others. There is no magic wand - how I wish there were! But there are small shifts, understandings, realisations, acceptances and changes we can make that open up more positive feelings for us, and enable us to find courage, comfort and wisdom for our life that we did not know we had. At the least, it can give us time and safety in which to share burdens, pain, troubles - or joys - that we may have been carrying alone for a long time.
