About me and my therapy practice

CORONAVIRUS NOTICE: NEED SOMEONE TO TALK TO? I CAN SEE YOU ONLINE.

While under Coronavirus constraints, I’m at the other end of a screen – I am still there for you to spend some time with me finding out how better to cope with the present time.

Are you worried? Is anxiety, stress or depression feeling out of hand or overwhelming? Are you struggling with circumstances – the Coronavirus crisis in particular?

Or would you like to use this enforced home-time to explore inwardly and discover more self-awareness? To address something long felt but unexplored? To expand your sense of life and fulfilment?

All these are good beginning points for counselling.

I work in a 'person-centred' way, and with a 'Focusing' orientation. It is all about you, the way you are, the pace you want to go, the things you want to talk about – literally anything is in that remit. No two people are alike, we are each our own world, and I try to walk with you in yours for a bit to help you explore that better. I hope you find your sessions relaxed and friendly, but also gently challenging as you begin to see things in a new light. There are other approaches I draw on sometimes, if I think you might find them helpful. These could include aspects of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Transactional Analysis (TA), psychodynamic theory, or mindfulness, for example, or working with the after-effects of trauma.

As our work together progresses, we both hopefully get a good feel of what helps you most.

There is no magic wand - how I wish there were! But I truly believe counselling has the potential to transform people’s lives, changing the way we see and interact with our inner selves, our outer circumstances, and with others.

Practice description

I normally work privately from my own premises in Leominster. But as from March 2020 I am now working online through the secure Zoom video conferencing platform. This is easy to use and does not require a subscription or registration on your part. It works on PC, Mac or tablet but not phones. If you are unsure visit my website at https://elizabethhallscounselling.com

My first session

On your first session I will go through some practicalities with you including talking about confidentiality and answering any questions you might have.

I will usually ask you 'Where do you want to start' - not always an easy question! You may have come for a particular reason, event, or situation, but it may also be for a feeling, a sense of what does not feel good or right for you. There is nothing you have to talk about if you don't want to. You can take your time, and I find that usually things develop quite easily in their own way as you begin to tell me a little about yourself and what has brought you here.

If you are worried about the first session, contact me prior to the session for an informal chat or to ask questions beforehand.  I look forward to meeting you.

Hereford Breast Cancer Haven: counselling is available on Wednesdays, finishing at 1800

About me and my therapy practice

The Breast Cancer Haven supports anyone affected by breast cancer for free, offering support from a range of professionals to help you with your own personal challenges of living with breast cancer. I am the counsellor at the Hereford Centre, now providing that service online. I work in a person-centred way: simply offering you a space which is just YOUR SPACE to find your sense of self again and find help and some healing for the emotional and psychological effects of cancer - and other aspects of your life around it. The Haven also offers counselling help for supporters of those suffering from breast cancer: husband, partner, sibling, parent, child or even close friend.

Common themes are loss of sense of self, particularly after immediate treatment ends, adapting to that process of recovery, making new decisions, readjusting priorities of what is important to you in life, negotiating return to work, handling relationships, finding new self-caring ways of being, healing traumatic memory and befriending the body again after surgery.  But no part of your life is excluded - if you want to talk about it, here is the space to do it.

Practice description

Work online (during the Coronavirus restrictions) is carried out through the secure Zoom video conferencing platform, which requires no subscription or registration.  It does require PC, Mac or tablet and does not work on mobile or telephone.

Contact the Haven in the first instance - we are still there online and by phone working from home! - to discuss what therapies are available and what you might like most to access, and what might be of most benefit for you. Phone 01432 361061 or email hereford@breastcancerhaven.org.uk

My first session

Prior to a counselling (or other therapy session) you will speak to one of our lovely ladies with a nursing background who will have a chat with you to let you know what is available and help you decide what would suit you best. No one will advise or tell you what to do. We will listen and put you first. Absolutely. You've done the medical stuff, the surgery and the treatments; we're here to help you feel human again and find your path into recovery.
