About me and my therapy practice
Perhaps you’re experiencing chronic pain, unexplained physical symptoms, or low energy. Maybe you’re suffering anxiety, depression, uncontrolled anger, or emotional problems. These might be the signs that you’ve experienced some kind of trauma or traumatic event in your life that you may or may not remember. It could be that you find it difficult to concentrate, or to regulate sleep patterns. You may just have a sense that things aren’t quite right, and something needs to change.
I specialise in helping people with trauma and trauma related conditions, which might include grief or other painful life events which can feel overwhelming. I integrate somatic therapies and mind-body techniques with traditional talking therapies, mindfulness, acceptance, and compassion based therapy.
I approach my work with clients not by asking ‘what’s wrong’ with you, but rather ‘what happened' to you? We all make unconscious adaptions in order to survive our experiences of threat and challenge. When we can recognise these adaptions, we can then make a choice to change them if they no longer serve us.
Trauma, suffering and psychological issues are not just manifested in thoughts, emotions and behaviours, but in physical sensations which we either choose to ignore, or we are unaware of. By working within the body, and cultivating an increased awareness of sensation and feeling we can re-regulate the nervous system and once again reconnect the mind with the body. In this way we can start to heal.
As human beings we have the capacity to heal and to re-regulate our nervous system, but that process needs to be done in connection and co-regulation with another person. A good therapist is non judgmental, and can offer you a safe space to heal and explore your issues.
Therapy is a process, and I aim during each session to meet you exactly where you are in your own process, helping you to realise a more expansive and fulfilled life, moving towards growth, self-regulation and autonomy.
My first session
I usually offer a free 30 minute telephone consultation prior to any therapeutic sessions. During this consultation, you can ask any questions and you'll hopefully get a better sense of whether I'm the right person for you.
I'll hope to gain some understanding of the issues affecting you and the goals you want to achieve in therapy. I’ll also ask you for some basic details, and briefly explain my professional obligations around confidentiality.
Asking for help or starting therapy can be a big leap. Acknowledge to yourself that you’ve probably had to draw on your courage and image resources - resources that you can build upon.
