About me and my therapy practice

Hello - I'm Tanya, I am a counsellor and psychotherapist based in York and online. I work with adults and young people (16+). I am registered and accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and I am a Chartered Psychologist by research training. I have been in practice since 2013 and I have worked with adults and young people in education settings, the NHS, a women’s counselling centre, and a practice for children, young people and families who had experience of trauma. I have been in private practice since 2018.

I work with people who come to therapy for a range of reasons. However, mostly, I work with people who have experienced trauma and/or people who are struggling with their relationship with their body. My aim is to help clients make sense of what is troubling them and support them to a place that feels better.

My initial training was in humanistic integrative counselling and psychotherapy. This means that I treat each person individually, and we will work at your own pace, exploring the issues that you identify as important to you. I am also trained in EMDR, Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and mindfulness-based approaches. I usually integrate my knowledge and trainings to tailor my approach according to what you experience as most helpful to you. My starting point is that you are the expert about the stories that you hold, and we will work together to explore what you want to address and how we might best work together.

Practice description

I work in a compassionate, clear, and respectful way. I work with people with a range of backgrounds and things that cause them distress. People of all genders, sexualities and backgrounds are welcome. Since 2016 the majority of my practice has been with people who have experienced trauma. I also offer Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), which is an evidence-based therapy usually used to help process memories that are particularly distressing. I am also a trauma-informed yoga teacher and therefore integrate understandings of mind-body-based and mindfulness practices to my therapeutic work.

I provide long and short-term counselling and psychotherapy. We will regularly review the work together, to ensure that the therapy is meeting your needs.

My first session

In the first instance, I offer a free initial 20 minute video call consultation where we will discuss what brings you to therapy and whether I may be a good fit for you. A phone call might also help if you are not sure how you might get on with me, or if you have any questions about how we might work together.

If we decide to go ahead, we will book an initial assessment appointment for a 50 minute assessment session, where we can discuss the issues that bring you to therapy and how I might help. Be reassured that choosing to come for an initial session, or have a phone consultation, does not mean that you are obliged to work with me. This assessment appointment is for both of us to establish a more in-depth understanding of what your needs are, whether you want to work with me, and whether I can help.
