My first session

First sessions acan bring up a mixture of emotions for clients, understandibly so as both the surroundings and myself are new and unknown to you as a new client.

Hopefully we will have spoken on over the phone in a free consultation call prior to arranging your 1st session so I should not be totally unfamiliar to you.

You will be met by myself with warmth and acceptance as well as a warm drink and a comfortable private therapy room.

There are onsite bathroom facilities available for clients that I feel it is important to make you aware of.

The first session always involves an element of paperwork and house-keeping issues from myself. I am professionally and ethically obliged to verbally go through my counselling contract and privacy policywith you. I will make time for any questions you may have about these documents which you will have had via email to look through prior to the first session.

We will spend time speaking about the issues which bring you to counsellig, the impact that these issues are having in your life at present/historically and your goals for your therapy experience.

The first session can feel like it flies by. My role as the counsellor is to mamage the time within all sessions and expecially within the first session - balancing the time to ensure that you as a new client feel you have fully understood everything we have discussed and also had time to share verything you wanted to within that first session.

Above all else, my therapy room is a sdafe, supportive, non-judgemental space for all clients where you will be fully 'heard'.

My first session

I am aware that there is a certain understandable amount of anxiousness that clients experience in the build up to and sometimes during the contacting and meeting a new counsellor for the first time. It can reduce the nerves and anticipation to have some understanding of what you can expect in that first session.

You will be warmly welcomed into my private, safe, confidential and comfortable therapy room. Hot and cold drinks are available, as are toilet facilities for both male and female clients.

During the session it is my role as a professional and ethically practising counsellor to verbally explain the essential sections of the written counsellor/client contract with you as well as my privacey policy which covers data protection and confidentiality.

Any questions you may have during this part of the first session I will be able to answer as we go along so please do ask.

I offer all clients a telephone consultation prior to making the choice to move forward to booking face to face, Skype or telephone sessions.During this phone call I do ask for a brief overview of what a client feels they are seeking support with.

It is important during this first session that time is given to you as the client to share in greater depth the reasons you made the choice to seek support through counselling and to speak about your expectations for your counselling experience.

For me as a therapist I would always aim to offer the client as much space and time as possible for you to feel able to share what is going on for you or what is impacting on you within your life that you are seeking support with in order to be able to offer you the most appropriate level of support and effective outcome for you as the client.
