About me and my therapy practice

I have spent a number of years working in complex care in the NHS as a psychotherapist. I am aware of both the limitations and advantages of the system, so I can be understanding and sympathetic to your needs.

My approach is integrative although I have been trained to work psychodynamically, and I have a depth of experience transpersonally. I work with dreams, unconscious processes and the inner world, which I believe has an impact on the external.

Having achieved a master's degree, I am a fully qualified psychotherapist and counsellor. However, every client is unique, and I adapt my understanding according to background and need.

Our work involves an exploration and understanding of your life and experience from birth to present. It is a collaborative process involving not only your memories but also unconscious processes, dreams, as well as spirituality. I seek to understand thought patterns, fears, obstacles and unhelpful perceptions that stand in the way of love and success. You are encouraged to talk about and understand your feelings, and to learn to distinguish between truth and fear. Your hopes and determinations will ultimately guide the process; my approach is determined by the individual and their needs.

I work with generalised anxiety disorder, PTSD, personality disorder, and I have helped numerous clients and patients through anxiety and depression, addiction, bereavement, panic attacks, and more. Having trained in an NHS hospital, I also work with more complex issues.

CONFIDENTIALITY:

Your sessions are confidential unless if there is risk of harm to yourself or to others, in which case, I will first talk with you about getting in touch with your GP.

Practice description

People often ask how the process works; what they want to know is how they can stop being anxious or depressed or to stop intrusive thoughts. Unlike, say, a broken arm, working with the mind is not straightforward and there is no magic cure for making things better. However, I have many times seen deep change take place with numerous clients, particularly those who are willing to look at and work with defences. No one will tell you it is easy, but through talking, listening, inner work, and some psycho-education, it is possible to be free of the problems that bind your thoughts.

WHAT IS THERAPY?

It is a helping relationship based on exploration of issues/problems, increased awareness and understanding, thus empowering you to make the appropriate choices and decisions in their life. I do not give advice as this goes against the principle of empowering you. I will carry out an assessment of the problems by taking down your history, and identify symptoms, issues and any concerns you have devising a psychological formulation and using relevant interventions to help you deal with problems.

“The one thing you can’t take away from me is the way I choose to respond to what you do to me. The last of one’s freedoms is to choose one’s attitude in any given circumstance.” ~Victor Frankl.

My responsibility is to be here for you, to guide you and help you find a way through. Your responsibility is to keep putting one metaphorical foot in front of the other and continue on the process of transformation and change.

My first session

Our first session is an assessment where we can discuss any questions or concerns you may have, as well as expectations and goals. We will explore your key issues and consider any problems you may have. It is an opportunity to convey any relevant information and provides us both with the chance to decide if we want to continue.

Having worked in mental health in the NHS, I am familiar with a range of issues. We will discuss the length of time you wish to engage in therapy and I will offer my thoughts around how best to move forward.
