About me and my therapy practice

My core training is psychodynamic, an approach which helps connect your current issues and your emotional responses (or lack of them), to past experiences and/or relationships. This traditional therapy believes that talking through your issues with a therapist can help clients to gain relief by expressing their painful emotions. Talking also helps to reveal areas of ‘stuckness’, unhelpful thinking patterns and outdated coping strategies. Once these have been explored and understood, choices can be made which open up the possibility for change.

I am also a qualified energy psychotherapist; the techniques used in this approach focus on the body as well as the mind. They include working with negative core beliefs, acupoint tapping as well as calming, balancing and grounding exercises. This approach is particularly good for clearing trauma/distress, including early negative experiences which are difficult to put into words. Both the energy and psychodynamic therapies work well together. Some clients prefer to talk, some clients prefer the body work and others are happy to mix the two approaches.

Practice description

I integrate both psychodynamic and energy psychotherapy in my private practice and adjust the approach to suit the needs of the individual client. As well as having a private practice, I work at a trauma focused service, using the psychodynamic approach to explore the origins of distress/trauma and various energy psychology techniques to clear symptoms (dissociation, flashbacks, panic attacks, high levels of anxiety) left by these unresolved difficult and/or traumatic experiences. I also work at a university counselling service, working with UK and international students, on a range of academic and personal issues. My main approach is psychodynamic, but I often use various CBT and solution focused techniques if they are helpful to the client.

My first session

I offer a free 30 minute online session, this is so we can meet each other before we start working together. During this time, it is helpful if you can give me some detail around the issue(s) you might want to work on. There will also be space for you to ask me questions about the way I work. If after this, you decide you would like to work with me, I will send you  some forms (counselling agreement, privacy policy etc.) and we can arrange the day, date and times of the sessions.
