About me and my therapy practice
I am a qualified Psychological Psychotherapist (M.A.) with over 25 years’ experience, working with children, young people, families and adults with a variety of complex needs.
I am qualified and experienced in the clinical practice of Child and Family Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Play Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Mindfulness.
I trained at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, a renowned world leader in pioneering emotional and psychological wellbeing treatments and theories, and specialise in psychological therapies.
I have experience within a diverse set of environments including: schools, community-based services (Turning Point), charities (Place2Be), Camden Openminded - Children Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) and private practice. I have engaged and supported children, young people, families and adults to work through various psychological and personal challenges.
What is psychotherapy therapy?
Psychotherapy is a talking treatment based on the principle that thoughts and feelings seated in your subconscious, early experiences and relationships can negatively impact on your present mental and emotional well-being. This can result in patterns of behaviours and difficulties (e.g. anxiety, depression, poor self-esteem and relationship difficulties) that make it difficult to navigate your daily life.
How does psychotherapy therapy work?
Psychotherapy can provide a space that enables you to develop an awareness and understanding of your subconscious thoughts and feelings and their influence in relation to the issues you may be facing. The foundation of psychotherapy is a collaborative and supportive relationship between client and therapist.
During sessions you will be encouraged to:
* speak freely and say whatever comes to your mind
* talk about your feelings, thoughts, dreams and challenges
* explore your life thus far and your past experiences
* develop individual goals
How can psychotherapy help?
Almost instinctively when faced with painful or difficult thoughts and feelings we suppress them, making them unconscious. Though they may be unconscious they will continue to affect how we think, feel and interact with others within our surroundings. Psychotherapy will enable you access to these thoughts and feelings, and develop an insight into yourself and others in your environments.
Over time you will:
* learn new improved ways of thinking about yourself
* learn how to manage the difficulties you may be facing and resolve negative past experiences
* develop new, healthier ways of managing stress you may be experiencing in your daily life
* improve how you relate to other people
My first session
Initial Consultation – I will then invite you to an initial consultation. This appointment will last for up to 2 hours, during which time we will discuss the difficulties you are facing, your background and what you want to get out of therapy. You will have the opportunity to ask me questions about the therapeutic process and experience how our sessions would feel.
Adults – following the Initial Consultation if we both feel that therapy will be of use to you and your individual needs, we will start weekly therapeutic sessions; each session being for 50 minutes.
Child or Young Person - following the Parental Initial Consultation, we will arrange an Introductory Meeting with your child or young person, to give them an opportunity to speak about their worries, and ask any questions they may have. If you, your child or young person and I all agree that therapy will be useful, we will start weekly sessions, each session being for 50 minutes.
Parental Sessions - following the Initial Consultation we will engage in sessions, and schedule an appointment structure that meets the needs of your family.
