About me and my therapy practice

There are many reasons that you might feel drawn to try counselling. It can be because something specific has happened in your life, such as the death of a loved one or another major life event. Maybe you are struggling to see a way forward. Perhaps you feel ‘stuck’ or are unable to find meaning in your life. Sometimes talking to a friend about it just isn’t enough or isn’t even an option. In a counselling relationship, you won’t be judged; I won’t tell you what I would do and I won’t tell anybody else what you have told me.

My core approach to counselling is person-centred. I believe that every individual has the resources within themselves to live a meaningful and happy life, and to enjoy safe and secure relationships.

This means that you are the focus of the counselling process. You decide what to bring to the sessions, and what happens during the sessions. I do not offer you advice nor do I tell you what to do or how to do it. I see my role as offering a safe, trusting and accepting space to explore your feelings, difficulties and emotions, allowing you to gain a better understanding of yourself and what you would like from your life and relationships. I will be right there at your side as you go through this process.

Although my approach is person centred, I am also trained to use CBT techniques if together we agree they may help you.

I currently volunteer with CRUSE, a local support group for Carers, Safer Steps (for survivors of Domestic Abuse) and Frontline 19. I have undertaken training in PTSD and trauma in connection with my work for Frontline 19 and am able to apply this knowledge to my client work.

Practice description

We will meet at a pre-arranged time each week. It is better to try to keep this time the same each week if possible. The sessions will last for 50 minutes. You will choose what to bring to the sessions each week, and the sessions will move at your pace. I will ‘check in’ with you regularly to see how you are finding the sessions, and if the process is meeting your expectations. We will review together the progress you are making, and how long you want to the counselling to continue.

Confidentiality is really important. What we talk about in the counselling room stays in the counselling room. There are some exceptions to this principle, and I will go through these with you when we first meet.

I am able to offer face to face sessions through the LifeHouse Therapy practice,  a private, tranquil and confidential space in Southchurch village, Southend.

In addition, I am able to offer on-line and telephone sessions too, if this suits you best.

My first session

In the first session, we will go through the basics together of how we will work safely together. I see this as a collaborative process; it is important that you feel involved and are happy with the Therapeutic Agreement. In this first session, we will explore why you have decided to try counselling and ensure that I am right the counsellor for you and your needs. At the end of the session you can decide if you would like to continue with further sessions.

This first session is offered at the reduced price of £30 per hour. Thereafter, my charges are £45 per hour.
