About me and my therapy practice

Hello, I'm Jess

Looking for a counsellor may well seem a daunting prospect, yet be assured, you are taking a courageous and clarifying step forwards.

My route into the profession began in 2017 via an interest in the person-centred/humanistic approach to therapy, where I found Transpersonal psychology. This is basically a more expansive way of working with clients across other models and incorporates the spiritual dimension to life.

Psychosynthesis, the branch of transpersonal psychology I am trained in, holds that we are unique souls on our own unfolding journeys of self-discovery and that any blocks and challenges we may encounter in our life, are potential areas for growth and transformation.

I firmly believe that it is our very deepest desire as humans to reconnect to more of our intrinsic wholeness and that our seeming 'brokenness' can point the way.

Prior to becoming a counsellor, I trained in the Performing Arts and had a career in media. Having long had a deep interest in human nature, this was perhaps an inevitable next step. It is said that that the greatest and only tool of an actor is to bring their truest selves to a role. Here, counselling is similar and I aim to meet you where you're at, in full presence and empathy.

Alongside private practice, I work in the Counselling and Psychotherapy service at Brighton Women's Centre, that provides a trauma informed approach (across all modalities) for self-identifying women dealing with issues such as homelessness and abuse. I am in regular clinical supervision, personal therapy and undertake mandatory ongoing professional development.

Practice description

I work with people 1:1 remotely and in-person to support their journey of healing, transformation and self-actualisation.

Ideally, we want to be able to show up in this world in a way that is grounded, fearless, expanded, in touch with our agency, joy and love. It is my deepest hope that we can work towards this together.

Psychosynthesis is an integrative, inclusive and holistic approach to therapy and, as such, we may work in a number of different ways. I like to work in the 'here and now' and we may address issues from your past, present and future. It is important we work at your pace and in a style comfortable to you. I will follow what you bring to each session; at other times, I may be more directive/ challenging, depending on where we are and who you are. I serve as a guide to help shine a light into more of who you are; in this way, my role is to facilitate your own self-knowing.

I have a particular interest in bereavement/loss, developmental trauma and early attachment issues. Boarding school and its legacy ('boarding school syndrome') is an area I am choosing to specialise in and is informed by my interest in neuroscience and the body (the nervous system and polyvagal theory). A deep love of nature underpins my own healing journey and is an area I am looking to bring into my practice. Perhaps our greatest wound is our disconnect from here, the healing benefits of which are well documented. I bring knowledge and experience of embodied dance/movement and a real curiosity into what it means to be alive, both in general and particularly at this profound time of change on earth.

My first session

First sessions are a chance for us to feel if we can work together, to get a feel for the other and ask questions or address any concerns you may have. It usually takes the format of my asking some questions to get a fuller picture of you and what you are bringing. If, for whatever reason, our working together is not possible, I will endeavour to refer you onto another professional. If we decide to continue, I usually suggest an initial 6 sessions, at which point we will undertake a review and contract for an open ended arrangement or a specific number of sessions, e.g. 10-20. It is important we both leave this first session clear on where we are going. I am happy to speak on the phone prior to first meeting if you've any questions.
