About me and my therapy practice
As a counsellor, I encourage my clients to find ways to value themselves; to increase their awareness of who they are, and what influences have been significant; and to work towards living more fulfilling and rewarding lives.
In my counselling role, I can help another person to understand and navigate some of the obstacles – whether in the present or the past - preventing them from engaging more fully with their life.
The relationship between me and my clients is central to the counselling process itself. This ongoing interaction can provide an opportunity for clients to explore the challenges they are facing in their everyday lives, and this can bring valuable insights and learning.
The counselling process often requires commitment and courage from my clients, and I aim to support each one effectively and consistently.
I have a background in health care, and my counselling experience has included placements with four organisations in Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and South Wales. This has given me a range of experience with adults who have accessed counselling for a variety of reasons.
I am an integrative counsellor, which means that I combine more than one approach to counselling. I aim to integrate humanistic, person-centred, existential and psychodynamic approaches, which I have experienced as being insightful and productive. I explain this in more detail on the 'My Approach' page of my web site.
My work with clients is 'relational', which means I acknowledge the importance of past and present relationships in my clients' lives. People have significant relationships both with others and with themselves, and difficulties in these relationships often bring people to counselling.
Under 'what I can help with', I have indicated some areas that can be challenging or distressing. However, I do not define or label my clients according to their perceived counselling 'issue'. This is because I work fundamentally with the person who arrives in the counselling room, and I recognise and respect every one as a unique individual.
Please visit the 'My Experience' page on my web site for a list of my formal qualifications.
My first session
The first session is an opportunity for us to meet, and to consider whether to proceed further with counselling, with no obligation or pressure.
I will invite you to say in your own words what has brought you to counselling, and how you think I may be able to help. We will then explore how we could work together, and whether this would be appropriate and productive for you.
Each 50-minute session costs £50. I may have some appointments available at reduced rates, for people with limited funds and for trainee counsellors. Please ask me if you require current details on this.
From the 'Working Together' page on my web site, you can access my Counselling Agreement, which outlines in more detail how I work with my clients; and a Personal Data Statement, explaining what information I need from my clients, and the reasons why I ask for it.
