About me and my therapy practice

I am a senior accredited counsellor / psychotherapist with  over 30 years’ experience,   trained in a range of approaches: psychodynamic, humanistic (University of Cambridge 1989) and CBT (WPF 2009), and in clinical supervision (Cambridge 1995). I see the work as a partnership in which my client and I work together to make sense of their emotional lives, and to move towards resolution of issues that trouble them, and a more fulfilling life. I believe the therapeutic relationship is central to a good outcome, and that people can be empowered to continue the therapy themselves. My approach is constantly evolving, and I value ongoing training and development. I work with a wide range of people of all ages and backgrounds including students, academics,  paramedics, young professionals, job seekers, retail workers, administrators, managers, health workers, fire fighters, police officers and retired people. Issues brought to me include work and relationship stress, depression and anxiety, PTSD, alcohol and drug-related issues, grief and loss, OCD, sleep and eating issues, abuse,  (I work with survivors and perpetrators), weight and body image and sexual and gender orientation. I work freelance and am registered with Bupa, Aviva,  and AXA Health, and am on the Private Practice Register.

For 12 years I was Course Director of Counselling/ Psychotherapy Courses (Cambridge and Suffolk Universities), and have co-produced a Counselling Foundation Degree Course. I supervise College Counsellors and trainees, and, formerly, counsellors at Drinksense. For 8 years I was  co-administrator of the Talking Therapies Inn, a monthly Cambridge forum for therapists. I also work as a volunteer with refugees from Syria and Iran. I believe this additional experience has enhanced my work and keeps me abreast of developments in the therapy field as well as in touch with local and global issues. I am fluent in Spanish and have lived in several European countries.

Practice description

I work in a peaceful, private consulting room, a short walk from the centre of Cambridge, on the ground floor of my home, which has easy access from the street and a cloakroom in the same hallway. There is street parking and easy access to city buses. I currently work both face to face and remotely ( usually on Zoom) and am happy with either, or a mixture of the two

My first session

I see the first session as an opportunity for my client and I to meet and for them to decide whether they feel comfortable working with me. I explain briefly how I work, and discuss confidentiality and the statutory exceptions to it, as well as any confidentiality policies set out by the Health Care Provider if relevant. I explain my cancellation policy – that I do not normally charge a fee, or count the session if there is a fixed number, provided they give me as much notice as reasonably possible. However if there are frequent cancellations I reserve the right to charge a fee or part fee. I then invite my prospective client to outline the issues that bring them to therapy, and ask if they feel comfortable with my taking some notes in this first session. I may make suggestions as to how we might work on those issues. I sometimes offer the opportunity to fill in a CORE 34 (Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation) and  with permission I draw a family tree , but not necessarily in the first session.  If the person is coming to me privately, we discuss the fee. (normally £60)  I generally invoice monthly  at the end of each month, or at a frequency chosen by my client.  We discuss times and days of meeting and ideally arrange to meet at the same time each week. I offer flexibility for those working shifts or who cannot commit to a regular slot for other reasons.

I generally work between 11 and 6.30 Monday to Thursday with the occasional supervision on Friday,  though I can sometimes offer an earlier or later time.

About me and my therapy practice

I did a 5 year training on the Cambridge LEA and University of Cambridge BCE course, and later a year’s Supervision Training, and a short course in CBT at the Westminster Pastoral Foundation. I have over 30 years experience as an integrative therapist and clinical supervisor in Cambridge and Suffolk, and have worked with a wide range of therapists and trainees.

I  see supervision  as a partnership of colleagues, in which we work together to explore my supervisee's relationship with their clients, as well as any issues that the supervisee finds it helpful to explore. We also pay attention to the supervisory relationship and review it from time to time, as well as exploring any parallel processes with therapy that arise.

For 8 years I was co-administrator  of the Talking Therapies Inn in Cambridge, and as a Counselling Trainer I have supervised many  trainees.  I was group supervisor for Drinksense Cambridge for many years. I also work as a volunteer with refugees, currently from Iraq.

I believe in the value of ongoing training and CPD, and for my own practice as a therapist and supervisor I have both group and individual (fortnightly ) supervision.  The varied experience I have described above, in my view,  enhances my ability to work with a range of practitioners and informs my work as a supervisor.
