About me and my therapy practice

Are you one of those people who feels "I should be able to sort myself out...I shouldn't need to ask for help...no-one will understand how I feel..."?

If this sounds familiar to you, then seeking help can be a really challenging and often scary prospect.  However, if you feel able to take a step towards finding out and resolving what's going on for you, then I may be able to help.

I strive to offer a safe and confidential environment in which to explore and reflect on past and present issues, and where you can decide what changes you feel you would like to make to help you move forward. It may be a crisis that has arisen in your life such as a bereavement, job loss, health issue or relationship breakdown, or something longer term such as low self esteem, anxiety, depression, lack of self confidence or assertiveness, or childhood issues that remain unresolved.

I strongly believe that we all have the resources to change and potential to grow, but can often feel hopeless or stuck in the way in which we live our lives and/or communicate with others.   My role is to really understand your view of the world and work with you to help you to find the resources you need to move forward and make positive life changes.

Practice description

I am a person-centred counsellor which means that the relationship between the two of us is at the heart of my practice. My approach is not to "diagnose" or "label" you, or give advice in a prescriptive way, but rather to offer an equal relationship which is collaborative, open, honest, non-judgmental, and accepting in every way.

My training is wide-ranging with experience gained in general counselling working with mental health difficulties, and in more specific areas including bereavement, and drug and alcohol addiction, working both within agency settings and private practice.   My practice is influenced by other therapeutic approaches including Transactional Analysis, Gestalt, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Inner Child work, Motivational Enhancement Therapy and creative counselling - all of which are underpinned by my person-centred approach which is fundamental and core to my practice.

I am an accredited member of the BACP and work within its Ethical Framework, a copy of which is available on request.

My qualifications are:

  • Foundation Degree in Counselling (Distinction) - Bath Spa  University - 2011
  • Level 4 & 5 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling - Counselling & Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB) - 2011
  • Certificate in Counselling Skills - Intermediate - Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA) - 2008
  • Awareness in Bereavement Care - Foundation Course (Cruse) - 2008
  • BACP Certificate of Accreditation awarded 2013
  • On line and Telephone Counselling Foundation Course - Counselling Tutor Ltd - July 2020.

In accordance with the BACP Ethical Framework (Working to Professional Standards), I am committed to ongoing and regular Continuing Professional Development to update my knowledge and skills, and ensure that I am working competently to deliver the services being offered.

My first session

If you would like to arrange to see me, then our first session will focus on what brings you to counselling, what you would like to achieve and to see whether I'm the right person for you to work with.   This initial session will take up to an hour to complete and there is no obligation for you to book a second session if it doesn't feel comfortable or right for you to do so.

Please contact me by phone or email with your enquiry and details of how best to contact you, and I will endeavour to respond as quickly as possible.
