About me and my therapy practice
Hi, I'm Mary and I am a counsellor based in Great Missenden, thank you for taking the time to view my profile. I work with both adults and children (aged 13 years and over) and have experience of a wide range of issues including anxiety, anger, depression, flashbacks, nightmares, self-harm, suicide ideation and low self-esteem. I also have a special interest in working with clients following a traumatic event, including where this has resulted in post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or complex post traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD).
As well as running ME Therapy, I am also the Buckinghamshire Counselling Coordinator for Aylesbury Vale and Milton Keynes Sexual Assault and Abuse Support Service. I have worked with survivors of sexual assault and abuse since 2018 and have specialist training in this area.
I am a caring and empathetic therapist and recognise that my clients are individuals therefore tailor my services accordingly. I work from a person-centred foundation but call on other theoretical approaches such as Trauma Informed Practice and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) to ensure clients get the most effective therapy for their circumstances.
I offer counselling either face to face in my garden therapy room based in Great Missenden which has parking or online counselling. I also offer a combination of face to face or online counselling to suit client needs.
Practice description
Following an enquiry, I offer an initial free phone call or online conversation, where you can ask any questions that you may have and I can get to know a little bit about you. If you are happy, we can then agree a weekly time for therapy.
I offer a safe non-judgmental environment where clients can bring anything to discuss and it is often through this process that clients can begin to make sense of their own lives and/or cope better with whatever life throws at them. I believe that a strong therapeutic relationship can facilitate change resulting in an increased sense of well-being and positivity. It may be that you are not sure what it is that doesn't feel right when you first start therapy and that is ok too.
I offer both short term and long-term therapy and believe it is healthy to always be working towards an ending.
My first session
I understand how difficult it can be to accept that you need some support and that accessing counselling may feel like a huge step, I do not underestimate how this may feel for some clients. During the first session, I will try to alleviate any concerns or worries about us working together and I will answer any questions. I will talk you through the terms of the working agreement, which will include confidentiality and its limitations. I will also ask you some questions about yourself so I can build up a picture of your situation and circumstances in order to tailor your support. We will also discuss what outcomes you are hoping to achieve through therapy and any timescales which you may have in mind.
It is essential that I am the right therapist for you as the therapeutic relationship is a major part in driving positive change and improving mental well-being.
