About me and my therapy practice

A patient often begins psychotherapy with fear and hope.  The fear of never being understood and the hope of finding someone who might understand them and in so doing, be able to help them.

The therapists enters into this relationship with an open minded receptivity searching to understand what lies behind and beyond Words . This is the beginning of the therapeutic alliance between patient and therapist.

I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist, trained at the Tavistock Clinic, which is primarily a talk therapy, However, because of my experience with PTSD (post traumatic stress syndrome) and sexual abuse trauma, I also use EMDR , (eye movement desensitisation & reprocessing ) in treating clients with complex trauma-related disorders and integrate body work when appropriate.

Before training to be an adult psychotherapist, I had a professional career as a documentary filmmaker. That experience has made me particularly sensitive to the lives and struggles of creative people who have specific issues in finding their voice and devising a way to survive outside the boundaries of more ordinary society. This experience also put me in contact with diverse populations from many countries and all walks of life. My innate curiosity about people and what makes them tick lead me to become a psychiatrist.

In short, I integrate various techniques, depending on the individual patients’ issues and bring a flexible, open minded approach to working with a patient

Practice description

As a psychodynamic psychotherapist, I work with women and men experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship issues, trauma, bereavement, and emotional difficulties, feeling disconnected or fragmented, struggling to find meaning or motivation, and other complex issues.

The process involves expressing what is troubling you, thinking together about stresses, conflicts, emotions, thoughts, behaviours, fears and losses.

We can reflect on past and present patterns, and explore different ways of feeling, being and managing. Sometimes we will be in conversation, sometimes I will simply listen.

From time to time we will review our work, aiming towards increased resilience, reduced distress and more satisfying relationships with the people who matter to you.

Effectiveness depends on your developmental history, current difficulties, regularity of session attendance, our relationship and other factors.

I also have the particular experience of working with patients who’ve been been traumatised as a result of sexual abuse. Because of this experience, I also trained to work with EMDR, (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing) to treat clients with complex trauma-related disorders. EMDR has become a notably successful evidence based way of working through trauma.

My approach has a relational-developmental psychodynamic core, integrated with elements of EMDR. My consulting room is In the Camden area, but due to the pandemic I am working remotely using Zoom and FaceTime.

My first session

In the first session I will do a 1 hour assessment to understand the issues that have brought you to want therapy.

This will include a history of your  mental and physical health and of your past.

This session serves another important purpose. It will be the beginning of a therapeutic relationship and will determine how we feel about working together.

At the end of this session we will discuss if we want to go forward. If so, at that time we will discuss hours of availability, the amount of sessions we’d like to start with and fees.

However, sometimes 1 preliminary session isn’t enough and if that’s the case we will be able to set up another preliminary session.
