About me and my therapy practice
I am a Person-Centred therapist with a passion for helping people to overcome the challenges in their lives, and to value and accept themselves more deeply.
I can provide a warm and compassionate environment for you to focus on your difficulties safely, and in confidence. I will be alongside you as you explore distressing feelings and emotions, and I will support you in making sense of past experiences or unwanted behaviour patterns.
The Person-Centred Approach places the expertise with the client – you are the expert on you, and how the challenges in your life affect you. Person-Centred therapy is led by the client, so you can be confident that your therapy will progress at a pace and depth which is comfortable for you. Working together, we can tailor your sessions to ensure that you get the most out of your therapy.
I believe that each of us instinctively knows what decisions are best for us, but that sometimes we lose confidence in ourselves or become influenced by the opinions of others. Our sessions will help you to understand your feelings and behaviours more fully, so that you can reconnect with the "real you". As your self-acceptance and self-confidence develop, you will feel empowered to make the choices which will lead to longstanding positive changes in your life.
I have a Master’s degree in Person-Centred Experiential Counselling & Psychotherapy Practice from the University of Nottingham, and I am also a member of a professional therapy practice, Acorn Psychotherapy (www.acornpsychotherapy.co.uk). I have experience of working with a range of issues, including: anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, work-related difficulties (including imposter syndrome), relationship difficulties, trauma, abuse and self-harm.
Person-Centred psychotherapy is a talking therapy, and I will encourage you to set the pace and direction of our work together, so that we focus on the topics which are most important to you. During sessions, I may rephrase your words or ask questions to help me to understand you more fully, but I will not judge you or try to interpret what you are saying. By reflecting your own words back to you, I hope to assist you in gaining a deeper understanding of your thoughts and emotions.
My goal is for you to feel safe to express your inner thoughts, and to feel understood and accepted for who you are. I will respect your values and choices, and I will not try to change your thinking or tell you what to do.
I offer both long and short-term therapy to suit your individual needs.
My first session
Starting therapy can feel a bit daunting, and I aim to make the process as straightforward and comfortable as possible. During our first session, I will take some details from you and I will ask you some specific questions to help me understand your situation more fully. This is to ensure that I am aware of any information which may be relevant to the work we do together, and is not an assessment. I will also talk to you about some forms which I will ask you to complete. All of our sessions, including the first one, will progress at a pace which feels safe for you.
