About me as counsellor
I offer a straight forward, approachable and friendly counselling service . I work with many issues, including: anxiety, depression, loss of confidence, grief, trauma, identity, family problems and in general ways to find happiness in life.
I am passionate about the potential power of counselling, and have seen many examples of the positive impact talking therapy has had on peoples' lives (including my own).
My approach to counselling
Sometimes therapy involves diving into the past, talking about difficult or traumatic experiences which have been kept buried as a way of coping. By talking about these problems in a safe and therapeutic space, acceptance can be found and then decisions made on a way forward.
Therapy can also be about looking at what is happening now, helping to negotiate past a problem that is keeping you stuck and unhappy. In these cases we will usually work with a problem-solving approach, which may or may not involve looking at the past.
And sometimes a counselling session is just a place to talk to someone empathic and without judgement, which on it's own can have huge therapeutic and wellbeing benefits.
Practice description
I qualified as a therapist in 2013 from the University of Brighton with a Postgraduate Diploma in Humanistic Therapeutic Counselling. Since then I have worked with a wide variety of clients across all ages from 18 to 80+. People with different problems, backgrounds, ethnicities and sexual orientations.
Please note, I have extensive experience of counselling University students (undergraduate, postgraduate and mature), but do not work with anyone under the age of 17.
In addition to my counselling qualification, I have trained in and hold certificates for: Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT Tapping) Mental Health First Aid, Suicide Prevention/SafeTALK, Self Harm, Working with Families of Substance Misusers, Family Mediation, Counselling Young People (17+), Disassociation and Trauma, Teaching Meditation, Online Therapy - Moving Your Practice Online, Bereavement in Covid-19
Depending on current Covid restrictions, I also arrange walk and talk outdoor sessions for regular clients, as well as one-to-one or small group Equine Assisted therapy sessions near Cambridge.
My first session
Once you have made initial contact I will first talk to you over email or phone (whichever you are most comfortable with) to arrange a first appointment. This appointment will be an opportunity to gather information about why you require counselling at this point in your life, whether you have had counselling/therapy before and what your expectations are. It is also an opportunity for you to ask questions about my counselling approach, qualifications and ethical practice. This usually last between 20/30 minutes, and is free.
If you have never had counselling before than please be reassured that there is no right or wrong way to receive therapy, and I will guide you through the process.
Occasionally I may sign-post you to a more appropriate service if I feel I would not be the right therapist for your needs. Again I will talk you through this process and makes sure you are supported.
