About me and my therapy practice

Counselling is a way of exploring difficulties or distress and our ability to manage or understand our thoughts and feelings. It takes place in a private, relaxed confidential setting. Sometimes the cause of our distress is clear from the start, sometimes not and it is often easier to talk to someone who is not involved in our everyday lives. You will be given the opportunity to be listened to in a caring, accepting and respectful way. My role is to help you to clarify your thoughts and feelings and help you to find ways of making changes. I qualified as a counsellor 18 years ago and having worked in NHS settings and within charitable organisations I am experienced at working with a wide spectrum of presenting issues. The number of sessions needed will vary with each person. Counselling doesn't offer instant solutions and it can take time to work through painful and difficult feelings; sometimes change may be quick, sometimes it may take longer. We will, however, review the progress regularly and negotiate further needs.

Practice description

My work is grounded in the Person Centred Approach which means that I work with your agenda in the belief that you carry within you the resources to know what is best for you but sometimes it is hard to find those resources or to know what is best.  My role is to facilitate the therapeutic space to help you explore what you are feeling and thinking.  I will not be giving advice or telling you what to do, but will help you to find your own way forward. I describe this as a journey we go on together, where you hold the map and choose the direction of travel and I help you make sense of and reflect on the journey.

My first session

The first session is an opportunity for us to meet and find out more about each other and then to decide if we can work together.  The relationship is central to our work and it is important that you feel that I can offer you a space where you feel safe to explore whatever is important for you; I am not there to judge but to offer  a place of trust and warmth for you to be heard unconditionally.  We will also discuss how counselling may be helpful for you and then arrange to meet on a regular basis if this feels appropriate.

About me and my therapy practice

I have been practising for over 20 years working with adults in healthcare and organisational settings and have managed a counselling service for the Anglican Diocese of Chester.  My core model and philosophy is deeply grounded in the Person Centred approach, but I am also informed by and do draw from other modalities, if appropriate.  I hold a Masters in Counselling and a Diploma in Supervision.

Practice description

I view supervision as a consultative relationship and aim to offer a space for review, reflection and development.  I am committed to working to develop an open, honest and trusting relationship of mutual respect and value feedback, which will contribute to this aim.  I wish to offer an environment where supervises feel supported to explore all that is relevant in their work as a counsellor.

During a supervision session, I mainly invite a focus using the 7-eyed content and process model described by Hawkins and Shohet.  I will also invite an exploration of process using creative tools, if this is appropriate and helpful for the supervisee. Essentially, I am offering a creative, exploratory space where the supervisee can reflect upon their work , receive feedback and offer best practice to their clients.

My first session

The first session is an opportunity to get to know each other better and to decide if we might work together.  I will be interested in where you trained, your qualifications and experience with clients, in addition to your model of counselling and your preferred learning style.  The relationship is essential if our work together is to feel helpful and it will be important for this to feel safe, trustworthy and respectful.   We will discuss practical issues around our contract together; time, frequency, fees etc as well as boundaries of confidentiality.  It is also useful to discuss hopes and expectations and preferred ways of working.  We will also build in and initial review and regular reviews thereafter.
