About me and my therapy practice
I have trained as a person centred counsellor, and I believe that therapy allows people to go from surviving to thriving. Sometimes without any reason, situations or people take away our trust, autonomy and belief in the world. It can feel impossible to say our story out loud, so I can offer you a calm space to explore what feels safe to you until you are ready and I work without making assumptions about the individual struggles you are dealing with. In therapy, it is possible to find a way through your experiences and re-gain that sense of you; a you that is more than what you've been through.
When we meet, I will bring to our relationship my experience and expertise in working with trauma, anxiety, depression and loss. I will also bring patience and an understanding that it may be difficult, confusing and even heartbreaking to talk about your experiences. I use a person-centred approach, which means I will support you at your own pace.
I have always believed that the more we talk to each other, the more we can heal, grow, and thrive. Sometimes saying it out loud is what you need to do, other times we may need to go further to make sense of what happened. I truly feel that therapy is one of the best investments we can make in our lives and that we all deserve the opportunity.
My first session
The first session can bring up feelings of nervousness, dread, anxiety, worry. When we meet for the first time, I will be very aware how strange an experience it may be for you to talk to me initially.
You may be surprised to know that some of the nerves will be shared; I will be hoping that the session goes well for you too. Please know that this is completely natural and most likely these feelings will begin to ease.
During our first session, I will ask questions which will be both practical and as a way of getting to know you and what you would like to get from counselling.
I do this for the following reasons:
To establish a safe working relationship between us
To ensure that I work in a way that will meet your needs
To be able to act should an emergency occur
To give you the opportunity to reflect on the progress you make whilst working with me
