About me and my therapy practice

Feeling overwhelmed, confused, distressed, hurt? You may have other words to describe how you are feeling, or you may not be able to think of one - regardless, I am offering to help.I offer a safe space for you to explore the areas of life that are important to you. Your goal or need may be specific or perhaps you are not sure - either way we can work together to help you discover more about yourself and realise your worth. You may want to journey toward change; the person YOU want to be or you may want to explore how you think or feel about things. The goal and how you decide to get there is entirely up to you.

Practice description

With a Foundation Degree in Counselling I offer face-to-face sessions in Greyabbey, Co Down. I also offer online counselling. Sessions are 50 minutes and I offer both short-term and long-term counselling which means we work together for as long as the therapy is beneficial to you. The type of counselling I offer is centred around your needs and the challenges you face such as, anxiety, stress, depression, self-esteem, bereavement/loss, relationships etc. No other human knows you better than you do so I will use my curiosity to help you uncover and understand how you uniquely experience life the way you do. Sometimes we may explore your past experiences and relationships which may help you unlock a deeper understanding of your present circumstances and sometimes we will delve deeper into how your thoughts and feelings influence your behaviour and reactions. This understanding may help you make decisions about today and tomorrow. As you do this, I offer to walk alongside you in a non-judgmental, genuine and empathetic way.

My first session

The first appointment can also be known as the assessment session to see if counselling is suitable and could be helpful to you, or if my counselling style is suitable for you. This is done by my listening attentively to your reasons for wanting counselling and the difficulties you are experiencing. You may also be asked to complete a simple assessment form that helps describe your feelings. This assessment may be repeated in future sessions to help understand your progress. During the initial assessment session you and I would discuss and decide whether or not to continue to meet. If we both choose to continue, we will enter into a counselling agreement which covers, for example - length and number of sessions; confidentiality and its limits; how to cancel a session; what to do if you have concerns etc.I work ethically and in accordance with BACP principles so I am aware that I may not have expertise with every issue raised. If I cannot be helpful to you I will endeavour to refer or signpost you to an individual or agency specialised or experienced with the issue you have identified. After the assessment you may wish to start talking more about what has brought you to counselling at this particular time. You may decide not to bring everything into your first session or you may decide open up about everything. As you open up I will start to understand your challenges more and will start to get some insights into you. You’ll also start to understand more about how I work and some insight into what you can expect.
