About me and my therapy practice

We can seek out therapy for various reasons but it's usually when something isn't working with how we are living. Perhaps there is suffering that has never been expressed or acknowledged, or a vague sense of something being 'off', or maybe because we feel the need to gain insight into life's headwind and how it has shaped us.

Some of what I am contacted to explore includes unfulfilling relationships, a lack of meaning and direction in life, an absence of intimacy with others, difficulties with sex or sexuality; the death of loved ones, traumatic memories that feel immovable, questions surrounding ones identity, or struggles with anxiety and depression. However whatever is going on, my aim is to meet you in your uniqueness and help you explore what you feel moved to speak about, while also supporting what may want to be worked with more deeply.

My approach is rooted in the trust that we all do the best we can - the best that we know so far - shaped from how we grew up and where we need to exist today in our lives. We all craft a solution to these experiences of past and present which although carrying great sense can often limit our attempts to change and grow. This may feel like old and stuck patterns, issues within relationships that keep repeating, or a general sense of disconnection and a struggle to be in the world with others.

Therapy and particularly the therapeutic relationship is one in which something different can happen: we can give care and attention together to what arises whether that be thoughts, emotions, dreams, or in other channels - gently shifting and making new meanings from these. It is always collaborative, starting with a conversation and the time and space to turn things over at a pace that feels right - but each therapy gathers its own emotional sense so reconnection and healing can unfold, allowing you to make deeper contact with where you are, as well as living more easily, creatively and in a more meaningful way.

Practice description

I work from the Practice Rooms on 160-162 Church Road.

It is well connected and there are various travel routes including accessible major bus routes, supermarket parking at the local Tesco and pay&display nearby. Hove station can also be walked to within 10 minutes.

If you do not live locally or would rather meet online then we can meet using Zoom, Skype, Google Meet, etc.

Qualifications & Experience

  • PGDip in Humanistic Psychotherapeutic Counselling – University of Brighton

  • Advanced Diploma in Embodied-Relational Therapy (Body Psychotherapy) – ERT Association

  • Diploma in Existential-Analytic Psychotherapy – SAFPAC (Ongoing)

  • Certified Brainspotting Phase 1&2 (Trauma Therapy) – BSP UK

  • Level 2&3 in Counselling Skills/Studies – Counselling and Psychotherapy Training Academy
I am a member of the BACP and abide by their code of ethics, as well as a member of Body Psychotherapy Network, the ERTA and the Southern Association for Psychotherapy and Counselling (SAFPAC). I also have full Professional Liability Insurance and I'm enhanced DBS certified.

In the past I have worked in various clinical settings including national charities, local low cost therapy services and as an honorary psychotherapist within the NHS. I also have experience working within an IAPT service and so understand how difficult it can be to heal and transform in manualised treatments (CBT) that invariably leave little space for the complexity of who you are.

It's worth mentioning that while therapy is an unfolding process that starts with a conversation - one both grounded and imaginative - the opportunities for how we work can move beyond this. Sometimes it can feel important to explore body based experiences: movement, breath, habitual gestures, internal sensations, or even the potential of working outside. Equally we may just sit, talk and follow what emerges between us.

My first session

Initial Session

The first session is a chance for you to speak about what's brought you to therapy, including the possibility that you don't feel all that clear and want to explore this a little further with me. It's also an opportunity to get a sense of how we may work together, for us both to see whether we feel a good fit, as well as to begin to build some trust between us.

Session Fees

  • £55 - £65 per 50 minute session

This is on a sliding scale based on what you can afford and what we agree during our initial session. I am willing to negotiate the fee depending on circumstances, although I have a limited number of concessionary spaces. You are welcome to check this with me.

Availability

I work Tuesday to Friday with a mixture of daytime and evening hours. Each session will be for 50 minutes, usually weekly, although I am open to various practical arrangements.
