About me and my therapy practice
My training is psychodyanmic in style, which broadly speaking means focusing on unconscious processes as they are manifested in the client's present behaviour. The goals of psychodynamic therapy are client self-awareness and understanding of the influence of the past on present situations and emotions. We will look at life patterns that are unhelpful to you, where they come from, and how an understanding of this can lead to meaningful change. Psychotherapy is a collaborative effort and can be hard work; my job is not to hand you answers or to advise you, but I will be there with you as you go through the sometimes difficult but enlightening process of therapy.
Having worked for over five years in a combination of university and NHS and private settings, I am accustomed to working with a wide range of people and mental health problems. I incorporate into my method, (depending on the nature of the person and the issues) elements of compassion-focused therapy, mentalisation based therapy and interpersonal techniques. These methods improve can your self esteem and aid effective communication in relationships allowing for a more meaningful interaction with others. I am a compassionate and supportive therapist with a traditional psychodynanmic approach underpinning my work. Even very short term work can be carried out with this approach and this is something that we will review as we go. The feedback I have had is that my style is gentle and empathic but also intense and thorough, often leading to profound change.
I work in very brief (up to 6 sessions), medium term treatment (10-20 sessions) as well as open-ended therapy. This will depend on you and your situation, any previous therapy you may have had, as well as how you respond to therapy. We will discuss this and agree the most suitable plan.
I currently work mainly face to face, in a good-sized, ventilated room. The practice where I work has Covid secure measures in place and surfaces are cleaned several times daily. I offer some online and telephone sessions as well for those who cannot travel.
I usually see clients once a week at the same time. This will be agreed at the outset, along with cost and terms of engagement with therapy.
My first session
I offer an initial, 30 minute telephone session free of charge. This allows us to establish if it is likely we can work effectively together. In this session we will agree if we are going to work face to face or online. In our first full session, we will talk about what brings you to therapy and what you would like to focus on in the work. We can talk about your expectations and length of treatment and agree a time and cost. Some concessions may be available for online work only. I may also ask you for the contact details of either your next of kin or your GP and of any medical conditions. For clients who wish to claim under their employer or an insurance policy, please have your reference number to hand.
