About me and my therapy practice

As a senior accredited, person-centred supervisor, the welfare of my supervisees is as important to me as the welfare of their clients (I see them as deeply intertwined) so although my way of supervising revolves around supporting you, it also involves working at relational depth and exploring transference and counter-transference in what can be difficult work. I'm particularly focused on the attachment and dependency needs of clients and making sure they are addressed and cared for. As a supervisee, the onus is on you to bring and openly share your work and concerns.

I work to a contract and with clear boundaries as I do with my clients. Currently, I have private supervisees as well as a variety of groups and individuals in the voluntary and education sectors. I am a senior accredited BACP supervisor, have been working in this role for 20 years, am committed to using the BACP’s ethical framework as a guide, and have facilitated numerous counsellors in their struggle through the accreditation process.  I wish you well.

About me and my therapy practice

Things fall apart. The centre cannot hold:  WBYeats

Because of the Covid-19 virus, as well as face to face work, I'm using Skype and/or telephone counselling for all my sessions.   My MSc was completed in 1998. I'm a senior accredited practitioner and supervisor, initially trained to post-grad level (1997) and have 23 years post-qualifying experience working as a counsellor. I have a comprehensive website where my credentials and approach are made explicit but the current crisis means that I'm available for very short-term work as well as a reliable, two-way ongoing agreement. We must proceed as best we can with what we've got, might have or have left behind. I very much wish you well.

Practice description

Over the years, I’ve realised that many people struggle to commit themselves to counselling or simply can’t find the time. This can lead to starting something but not seeing it through to completion. Often, what people need at this point in their lives is short-term help to focus on what’s bothering them so that, with the counsellor, they get a chance to see things clearly.

Solution-focused counselling is about identifying the specifics of a problem and what things would look like if the problem was solved.

Tthe open-ended counselling I do is informed by long-term training, ongoing professional development and a lot of experience. In order for what is going on under the surface to really be seen, a long-term relationship with a therapist is essential and makes it possible to reach and integrate very deep feelings we are unaware of in everyday life, but which are often driving us.

I also counsel couples. My aim is to hear how the relationship is experienced for both parties and to see clearly how the dynamics of the relationship are operating. A couple is essentially a ‘system’ which develops its own rules, beliefs and values. Often these ‘ways of being’ have been passed down from our parents and we have absorbed what it is to be a husband/wife/father/lover/mother from our own families. Untangling this to see what we do and why can give us choice about the way we wish to proceed.

My first session

During the first session, I'll isten to you and answer any questions. In the last 10 minutes, I'll aim to offer you a sense of what I see and where the focus needs to be.  Then we'll make an agreement about how to proceed.  Usually, this agreement is to meet another 5 times, stopping in our fourth session to think about where we are, what's needed and whether to stop after 6 sessions or go on longer.

About me and my therapy practice

I work with whatever mode suits you best.  Some people are great at visualising, some at thinking. Some are good at drawing or sculpting, some at acting or writing stories.  Whatever your foremost mode, we'll find out and use that to engage with the difficulty and practice the solution.

Practice description

Training is not therapy but is more focused and specific.  We'll have a one to one assessment to identify what needs to be addressed, followed by an exploration of that problem.  From this, I'll suggest a variety of tasks which we can practice doing together in the session so that they can be followed up at home.  Together we will build a whole raft of cognitive-behavioural solutions appliable to achieving what you're trying to achieve in your everyday life.

My first session

An assessment where you try to talk about the difficulty and I mostly listen before creating a summary of the difficulty.  If you think this fits for you, we'll come up with some homework, see how you get on and pick it up the following week, tailoring our next step to what you've learned.
