About me and my therapy practice

My first training was ‘Person Centred’ therapy which places emphasis on providing a safe, empathic, non-judgemental space. Over the years I have studied trauma and come to specialise in Complex PTSD using EMDR and more recently the Internal Family Systems approach (IFS)   All the approaches and techniques I use are evidence based and approved by the NHS NICE guidelines for therapy.

I began my therapy journey over 30 years ago, when I experienced a particularly traumatic bereavement and consulted a psychotherapist. Having experienced firsthand the far reaching benefits of good therapy, I then decided to change my career from being a marketing manager for a large corporation, to training to be a therapist. Since then I have continued to be very lucky in being able to have a career in something which I am passionate about.

I have worked in the NHS, voluntary sector and in private practice. I provide both short and long term therapy. I work with individuals and with couples. I have worked in a variety of settings over the years including the NHS, drug and alcohol services, the voluntary sector and in private practice.

I was the Clinical Lead at Kingston Bereavement service for 7 years where I was responsible for the recruitment, training and support of 24 bereavement counsellors.

Practice description

Person Centred Therapy

The goals of person-centred therapy are increased self-esteem; trust in one’s inner feelings and experiences as valuable sources of information for making decisions; increased ability to learn from (rather than repeating) mistakes; decreased defensiveness, guilt, and insecurity; more positive and comfortable relationships with others; an increased capacity to experience and express feelings at the moment they occur; and openness to new experiences and new ways of thinking about life

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is a powerful new psychotherapy technique which has been very successful in helping people who suffer from trauma, anxiety, panic, disturbing memories, post traumatic stress and many other emotional problems. Until recently, these conditions were difficult and time-consuming to treat. EMDR is considered a breakthrough therapy because of its simplicity and the fact that it can bring quick and lasting relief for most types of emotional distress.

Cognitive Behavioural Approach

This is a type of therapy that aims to help you manage your problems by changing how you think and act. The Cognitive Behavioural Approach can help you to change how you think (‘cognitive’) and what you do (‘behaviour’), which can help you feel better about life.

Bereavement Counselling

I offer bereavement counselling to help with your feelings of grief. You can talk about the person who has died, about how their death is affecting you and how you are coping. Using counselling skills will help you to understand your feelings and can help begin to adapt to life without the person who has died

My first session

Before we met, I would send you an information sheet explaining how I work and what to expect.I

I usually suggest we meet for an initial 50 minute session to see how we might work together. We would discuss the issues that bring you, and look at what you want to get from therapy.

If we think I can be helpful, I suggest we meet for six sessions and then review to make sure you are getting what you need.

It’s very important that you feel comfortable with me as we know that the quality of relationship with the therapist hugely improves therapy outcomes. You can also ask me any questions you might have about me or therapy.

Please feel free to phone or email me with any questions you may have. I can offer a 10 minute telephone call to see how we might work together

I have 28 years of experience as a psychotherapist, supervisor and trainer.

I am an Accredited Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and adhere to their Ethical Framework. I hold professional liability insurance for my work. I am ICO registered and GDPR compliant.

You may wish to consider the words of the British Asssociation for Counselling and Psychotherapy

“Accreditation is a quality status for experienced practitioners who can demonstrate high standards of competent and ethical practice.”
