About me and my therapy practice

Counselling isn’t an ‘out of the box’ experience, it isn’t a case of just ‘topping up the fuel tank’ when we are running low. The end product might be similar, a sense of feeling refuelled and ready to hit the road again, but the experience is very different for each person. When I work with people the first few sessions are like a ‘getting to know you’ process, the focus is on understanding what life is like for this client. I try and see life from the client’s perspective in order to begin a process of understanding what life is like for the client.

Practice description

Trained as an Integrative Counsellor, I work using Person Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Transactional Analysis. In addition to this I’m also trained to deliver Therapy in Nature, which takes counselling out of the traditional counselling room and outdoors, here we can engage with nature while working therapeutically.

I have specific training and experience in bereavement counselling and additional training in working with trauma, depression, anxiety and victims of sexual abuse. In addition to my work with adults I have almost 6 years experience working with young people at the charity 'Off the Record Twickenham'. I have experience of working with clients suffering from anxiety, depression, anger, low self-esteem, low self-confidence, ADHD, Sexual Abuse, Suicide Ideation and Self-Harm.

I am a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP), and currently working towards accreditation. I offer counselling and psychotherapy in London, either indoors within a counselling room or outdoors in nature. Feel free to contact me for more information: karl@reachforhelp.co.uk

About me and my therapy practice

Therapy Outdoors

The practice of conducting counselling and psychotherapy outdoors may seem a little strange to some. It certainly can feel a little unusual when we first start, but the whole process is about reconnecting us with the outdoors through counselling and psychotherapy, and using that connection to move forward.

Outdoor therapy is based on the idea that we are all connected to the environment around us, you may have experienced this without knowing. For example, when it’s raining and cloudy outside often we can feel a little down and miserable, yet when it’s sunny and warm it can have the opposite effect. This is probably the most basic observation we can possibly make in relation to Outdoor Therapy, but if we look a little deeper and explore other connections there is actually a wealth of opportunities to benefit from around us. Taking therapy outdoors enables the client to engage with aspects of themselves in relation to the natural environment around them. The Outdoor Therapy process allows us incorporate the environment to heighten the senses in a way that a counselling room cannot. Experiencing the smell of a pine forest, the sound of a stream, or coming face to face with wildlife are experiences that most of us do not usually encounter in day to day life. These can be brought into therapy and the impact explored in a therapeutic and mindful way by the client.

By engaging in Outdoor Therapy it allows us to take our problems into a very natural environment, yet one that we may not be too familiar with. When working outdoors there is in fact much more going on around us then we realise at the time. Part of the process is understanding how to integrate with our surroundings yet still benefit from the therapeutic counselling that is taking place.

Practice description

If you would like to try Outdoor therapy and experience the benefits that therapy outdoors can offer, simply contact me for more details. I will be happy to chat through what is involved and what to expect. We don’t have to spend all our sessions working Outdoors, you can try just one or two, because it really is about you, the client, and what works best for you. Outdoor Therapy with Reach for Help is available in London and Surrey.

Availability

I am currently available for room-based supervision, outdoor supervision and online supervision.

Room-based supervision is available close to Moorgate in the City of London.

Outdoor supervision is available in either Greenwich or Banstead, Surrey.

About me and my therapy practice

As a qualified supervisor, I work with a Hybrid of the Inskipp & Proctor Functional model and Hawkins & Shohet Process models of supervision. I aim to support and work with the supervisee in the work that they deliver, be that therapeutic counselling/ psychotherapy or other profession which may benefit from supervision.

As a supervisor, I work with the supervisee in a collegial manner, acknowledging the importance of the supervisory relationship as a foundation from which to build mutual trust upon. Prizing the importance of a long-term supportive alliance. At the same time respecting boundaries and the importance of safety to the client, supervisee and others.

I work with individuals and groups, I am a registered member of the BACP and NCIP, and I hold an Advanced Diploma in Counselling Supervision, Accredited by the National Counsel for Integrative Psychotherapists.

Practice description

Duration and Delivery

Supervision can be either room-based or online, I also offer ‘Outdoor walk and talk’ Supervision. The duration of each session will be 60 minutes unless agreed otherwise. I only work with Supervisees who are registered with a professional body. If a Supervisee works for an organisation, then that organisation must also be registered with a professional body too. I do not provide reports to 3rd parties, but I am happy to provide references for supervisees where appropriate.

Communication and Contact Between Sessions

Supervisees are welcome to contact me between sessions, ideally via email. Your respective professional body may also be able to help concerning your query. If you feel a client or other is in danger then contact the emergency services, do not wait for me to get back to you.

Ethical Dilemma Resolution Process

As a Supervisor will endeavour to support the Supervisee in working through an ethical dilemma. Supervisees should also contact their respective professional body. The BACP, for example, offers a dedicated service for supporting a therapist through an ethical dilemma. The Supervisor may also seek support from their respective Supervisor and professional body.

Fitness to Practice

If the Supervisor feels that the Supervisee may be unfit to practice, then it is right for the Supervisor to bring this observation to the Supervisee for discussion and further exploration. If, after exploration the Supervisor concludes that the Supervisee is unfit to practice, the Supervisor will advise the Supervisee of their reasons for reaching this conclusion. If an agreement cannot be reached, the Supervisor may withdraw the provision of Supervision, terminating the agreement between both parties. In some cases it may be necessary for the Supervisor to report the matter to a relevant professional body.

Fees

60-minute Supervision: £85

90-minute Supervision: £120

60-minute Supervision for Students: £65

90-minute Supervision for Students: £90

My first session

We will explore what the supervisee would like to get out of supervision and what the supervisor can offer in relation to those needs.

We will form a contract together and agree to work within the terms of this contract.

The first hour of supervision is free, this enables us to assess if we are a good fit without commitment.
