About me and my therapy practice

Welcome to my profile, my name is Emma, I help adults, young people and parents to find ways to overcome the challenges that they may be facing. I use an integrated counselling approach for unique tailoring of support to individual needs. I offer a friendly and professional service, fostering feelings of hope and empowerment. I work within a safe and transparent framework, endeavouring to help those I support to feel heard, respected and understood. There are studies to show that the best counselling outcomes are gained where there is a warm and trusting counselling relationship, which I endeavour to provide.

How I Work:

A common theme for seeking counselling can be feeling stuck in some way, which can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and/or frustration, impacting on relationships and enjoyment of life in general.

The counselling that I offer can provide a space to consider what has happened to you, or what is happening to you, to try to make sense of your experiences to reduce any impact that these may continue to hold over you. Exploring possible ways forward that feel right for you.

We cannot change your life experiences, but we can work together to find ways of your living more comfortably alongside these and making sense of the effects. It can be hard to talk about life experiences, though it can also feel validating to receive support and empathy for what you are going through. This process, though challenging, can be helpful for positive growth and change.

I offer short, medium, and long-term counselling, to suit varied needs, usually 50 minutes on a weekly basis. A review takes place at regular intervals to ensure that your counselling remains a good fit.

In addition to counselling, I can work with you if you are a parent, to support your child's emotional wellbeing and to explore ways of approaching the challenges that parenting can bring.

Practice description

I hold qualifications in Person Centred Counselling, Psychodynamic Counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). I have undertaken training in Attachment Theory.

A Person Centred Counselling approach underpins my work, providing a safe place for you to feel heard and understood, enabling growth and personal development. This approach places an emphasis on the importance of positive regard, acceptance, and transparency within the counselling relationship as an effective route toward change.

Psychodynamic Counselling can involve making links between your past experiences and the person you are today. There may be processes that you have been unaware of, that impact on the way that you feel about yourself or relate to others. This kind of therapy can be useful in increasing your awareness of these processes, which can often result in raised self-awareness and understanding.

CBT can be used to explore links between thoughts, feelings, behaviour and physical responses. Specific tools can be used to address unhelpful patterns of thinking or behaviour. CBT can include exploration of beliefs about yourself, whether these are accurate, helpful or unhelpful, and how these beliefs may have been developed through earlier experiences. CBT provides specific models for addressing problems with anxiety or depression.

Attachment Theory can be useful in considering how early childhood experiences may impact on patterns of relating to others in the present day.

Integrative Counselling can incorporate elements of several of these approaches.

As a registered member of the BACP I work within the BACP ethical framework. I have held registration with the BACP since commencing counselling training in 2004, upgrading membership appropriately over this time. In 2022 I was subject to a routine BACP audit, meeting all specified requirements for practice, access to supervision and ongoing training requirements.

My first session

Our initial appointment will be up to 60 minutes and provides an opportunity to discuss the current situation and desired outcomes, enabling us to consider the most suitable plan and approach. We will discuss confidentiality and the framework that we will work within. In line with the BACP ethical framework, I will provide for discussion a copy of our counselling agreement which sets out the terms of our working together.

This initial meeting is designed to help you to decide whether our working together will be useful, it’s ok to take some time to think about this, starting any kind of therapy or support is a very personal decision.

I have 15 years’ experience of assessment and treatment of a wide range of mental health and emotional wellbeing difficulties within the NHS, County Council and school-based services.

The integrated counselling that I offer can be helpful in approaching a wide range of difficulties. I work, and have worked with experiences of loss or bereavement, abuse and trauma, feelings around sexuality, identity, gender identity, self-esteem and confidence, unresolved feelings around childhood, relationship problems, anxiety, depression and managing emotions.

In line with BACP requirements I attend regular continued professional development training. This has included topics such as gender identity, sexuality, neurodiversity ASD/ADHD, managing risks, equality and diversity, attachment/trauma/loss, working online, self-harm.

About me and my therapy practice

I enjoy supporting professionals to reach for their maximum potential on a personal and professional basis through clinical supervision.

In a parallel process I strive to reach for my own potential, whilst holding in mind a shared agenda of supporting the client to find and reach for their goals.

The supervision I deliver is designed to promote positive wellbeing of the therapist, providing a safe and containing space to discuss client work. The ways in which therapists promote client self-care is mirrored within the supervisory relationship.

Supervision can be used to identify safeguarding or risk concerns and to consider ways to address and manage these. To increase confidence within client work, as appropriate, and to identify any special interests/training needs.

Practice theory links can be identified to promote best practice and to draw attention to any parallel processes within the counselling and supervision rooms. With a view to increasing understanding of the client and their needs.

I engage with my own regular supervision of client work and supervision and believe this to be pivotal to good practice and effective service delivery.
