About me and my therapy practice

Horse Enhanced Learning and Psychotherapy at Top Farm.

Our wonderful team of horses co-facilitate therapy sessions with myself as a qualified and experienced therapist. The sessions enable you to learn about yourself, and your relationships with others, in a truly unique way. We will discuss and process your feelings, behaviours and patterns that emerge during sessions with the horses.

You do not need any horsemanship skills or knowledge (in fact you may have never even been close to a horse before) and the sessions are ground based so no riding involved.

Practice description

Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) has proven to be powerful for improving communication skills, social skills, assertiveness/ confidence, problem solving and relationship issues. This is because, as prey animals, horses are highly social. Their survival depends on the herd which is why they are adept at perceiving the emotions of their companions. They also have a unique ability to evoke feelings. This provides clients with the opportunity to explore their emotions in a safe, patient, and non-judgemental way.

A lot of the work will focus on body language. Body language plays an enormous part in how confident we feel and gentle leadership exercises will create a new-found self-esteem. The horses’ ability to sense intensions and mirror our emotions makes them great at unravelling unhelpful interactions and communication. As the sessions are experiential clients will learn transferrable skills to make connecting with humans easier again.

The following are some of the key areas addressed when working with adults, children and young people:

• establishing trust

• communicating effectively

• managing energy/ arousal levels

• setting and maintaining safe and appropriate boundaries

• recognising, understanding and moderating emotions

• developing an approach to life that fosters an attitude of ‘gentle leadership’

My first session

Before engaging in any service, our policy requires all clients to have a 60 minute assessment. This allows us to gain information on your issues, concerns and therapeutic goals.

More importantly you get the chance to meet us and the animals at the site to check that you are comfortable with the setting before committing to working together.
