Practice description

I use the initial session as a way of understanding what has brought you to counselling. At this appointment we can also work out what you want to achieve in the sessions.

This also gives you the opportunity to get a feel for counselling and whether it feels right for you.

Using psychodynamic and systemic approaches I will work collaboratively with you to help develop your resources and identify areas which are not working so well and how these might be overcome.

The integrative way of working is beneficial for both individuals and couples as it helps you understand yourself and your partner more fully. This can be especially useful when you have reached a crisis point or communication has become blocked.

The integrative approach also helps couples to make sense of  their "couple fit"  which can assist you in developing better communication, conflict resolution and compassion for each other.

Individuals will benefit equally from an integrative approach as it supports you in developing self awareness which is key to helping you make the changes you want in order to live more joyfully.

I  provide a safe and non judgemental space for you to explore whatever is troubling you and together we work out a way of overcoming the issues.

I offer weekly sessions although this can be flexible to suit your requirements.

My first session

We will use our initial meeting to work out what you want from counselling so we can identify how to achieve this in the best possible way.

I will explore areas of your life and relationships which are are working well as well as those which are proving more challenging.  This ensures we can come up with some ideas of how best to move forward and work towards an agreed outcome.

The first session includes contracting so we are both in agreement of how any future sessions will look. It is also the time when we both work out how often and when we will meet up.

Confidentiality, contact between us and any other practical issues can be worked out at this stage.

I will also take some history about you (and your partner for couple therapy) as this is necessary in order for me to fully understand you and your circumstances.

It is important that you are fully included in any decisions and you are happy with our arrangements before we embark on future counselling. The first session provides us both with the opportunity to  sort out how we can best work  together.
