About me and my therapy practice

Hello I'm Rob, a highly experienced counsellor, having worked for over 25 years with people of all ages from 18 to 85. I offer one-off sessions, short term counselling (typically 6 – 8 sessions), as well as longer therapy which could be once or twice each week over several months. I work with individuals.

Counselling is a way of exploring unanswered questions. Finding the answers isn’t always easy or comfortable, but it’s better to know what going wrong than keep hitting the same old crash barriers again and again.

I offer a free first exploratory session to allow us to meet each other, to discuss the issues that you are dealing with and to see if I can help you. If you decide to continue after that, the sessions are 50 minutes in length, and I normally see people once a week, but can also see you twice a week if that seems more helpful.

You can contact me by telephone, email or text to ask any questions.

Practice description

As a registered member of the BACP, I abide by their Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy. I adhere to their guidelines in this regard - copies of which can be obtained from the BACP. I hold professional insurance and am registered as a data controller with the Information Commissioner's Office.

I qualified as a counsellor in 1992 when I gained a diploma from the University of Portsmouth. After that I worked as a counsellor at King Alfred’s College in Winchester (now the University of Winchester).

While at Winchester, I developed with my colleagues first a Certificate course in counselling and later a Diploma course. This ran for several years during which I taught trainee counsellors and worked also as a supervisor.

In 2000, I moved to Chichester and began my private practice which has continued ever since. I worked as a senior lecturer at the University of Chichester specialising in issues around early childhood. I retired from this post in December 2016.

I am also a writer and researcher. My book Child Development and the Brain was published by Policy Press in 2015. I am currently writing the second edition which will be published in a few years time.

About me and my therapy practice

I am an experienced supervisor. I have a diploma in supervision (with distinction) from the Society of Analytical Psychology.

I work with experienced counsellors/psychotherapists as well as those who are newly qualified or in training. I have experience of working with groups and individuals. I also have experience of supervising other healthcare professionals.

Practice description

I see that supervision has at its core four clear purposes and these direct what I offer my supervisees.

To provide a reflective space for the therapist where the emotional needs of the client can be explored.

To develop a place where we can explore the transference and countertransference issues that inevitably arise in our work.

To make sure that the therapy is safe for both the client and the therapist.

To help with the professional development of the counsellor/psychotherapist. This is clearly of particular importance for those who are in training but I have been working for 25 years and am glad to say that I am still learning.

My first session

You are welcome to book an appointment for an informal dicussion about how we might work together. I do not charge for this.
