About me and my therapy practice
I work both in person and on-line.
Do you feel stuck, anxious or depressed? Is life challenging? I offer a welcoming space to look at what is going on in your life.
I am calm and compassionate and help clients to look at long-standing behaviour that is no longer helpful, your upbringing or past trauma. Or you may wish to look at a current specific issue or relationship. Perhaps you simply wish to understand yourself better. I will work with you at your pace. I bring a warmth and curiosity to my work but feel that humour is also important.
Who I work with
I appreciate the impact of isolation, depression and feeling different. I have many years of experience of the following issues:
Depression, anxiety, panic attacks
Social anxiety
Relationship issues
Cultural difference
Addiction, (esp. gambling)
Abuse, self-harm, suicidal feelings
Attachment, family relations
Trauma, often using somatic/bodywork. PTSD
Men's issues
Mid-life
Chronic pain and health anxiety
Neurodiversity, ADHD in adults Boarding School survivors Psychiatric conditions - psychosis, etc.
I am interested in exploring how the care that we received as a child, or lack of it (for example with narcissistic parents) impacts on us, and also the expectation of men to be strong and unemotional. I work increasingly with ADHD and neurodiversity in women.
Other Information About Me
I have worked in a university student counselling service, an agency for gambling addiction and a psychiatric ward. I have also trained in group analysis and run an experiential group.
I abide by the BACP's ethical values. I hold a Diploma in Integrative Counselling from University of the West of England.
Practice description
Where I work and cost
I work from my therapy room in Alma Road, Clifton, Bristol BS8. This is a quiet, private space. I understand that it is daunting finding a counsellor so we can meet for an initial session without commitment.
I work mainly from a psychodynamic perspective, working longterm with clients through talking therapy and looking at how their past relationships and experiences have impacted on how they are now.
I also use other creative techniques such as drawing, chair work, writing, bodywork, if it feels appropriate. I sometimes use CBT and other tools if necessary.
I work with individual adults aged 18 and up. I ask for a weekly commitment to therapy and we will fix a regular time to meet.
My first session
I offer a 15-minute free phone conversation to discuss therapy with me. A first full session will involve me taking a full history of your emotional development: family, past events, current difficulties, medication. It also gives you the opportunity to ask questions about therapy and how I work.
